“almost the best meal I ever had in Great Brittain, but butchered in the spa”

When you drive up the hotel it amazing, a wonderful setting.
A very warm welcome by the porter and than it stopped.
A big fireplace could warm up the atmosphere but no wood? the staff was behaving like officials.
All staff was just smiley and working for there monthly rating by there superiors.
Even asking us to rate them well en distributing form for that.
At first we had rooms in the "modern" side bud a Novotel has more charms.
Quickly changed rooms for the more ( much ) more expensive "mansion"
Not one room was perfect, i still wonder how they can mess up such a beautiful house.
Everywhere they put stuff that does not helps to make the hotel looking better.
There is nothing more difficult than making a balanced mix of contemporary design and original period architecture and here is a good example how it is not done.
And God knows why it is necessary tho put horrible so called "art" in the gardens.
The food in indeed "the stables" just good enough to survive until your next meal.
All that gave me the Disney Paris feeling , beautiful place but horrible food
After 20 mails to the Spa asking for the treatment we would have liked we gave up and went our selves the day of arrival to make the appointment.
A hot stone massage seamed very nice to me and i had i before i other very nice Spa's such as The for Seasons La Terre Blanche, The Mandarin Oriental Paris, Park Hyatt Paris.
But never someone tried to debone me with those stones.
I hoped for better to come but it never came, and my head massage skipped why?

We made a lovely refreshing walk one the domain an at night we had the best dinner ever in Great Britain.
But what a horrible dining room, yet the bar was nicely decorated, to Russia with love?
It must be frustrating for Russel Bateman ( i hope for the guests he is still there ) to make such wonderful creations and see them be served by a poor trained staff.
But the food was so good that we took a new reservation the day after.
Sorry, I will gladly follow Russels future cooking wonders and only for that I would consider an other stay at The Grove.

Room Tip: Colettes and the golf are more than ok but don't go for the rest

We recently got married at The Grove and the day couldn't have been more perfect! The following week to lessen the post-wedding blues my new husband took me to Colette's at The Grove for dinner. As luck would have it we were seated at the table that was in exactly the same spot that we had said "I do" in front of friends and family, just six days earlier. Colette's is such a fabulous restaurant. The staff are respectful but not at all stuffy and are happy to have a little laugh and a joke with you. The food and wine was outstanding. We had the six course meal which came with various canapés and amuse bouche and a little pre-desert desert which was a nice surprise. A nice touch is that once you have chosen from the menu they present you with a small version of your menu of choice which sits on your table for reference as it's easy to forget what you initially ordered. You are then welcome to take this with you at the end of the evening as a keepsake. We had gin and tonics in one of the hotel lounges beforehand then a walk around the beautiful gardens. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff at The Grove, you will never experience anything like it. As soon as you drive through the front gates you are transported into another world, the only sad part is that eventually you have to leave at some point, but then you can always look forward to planning your next visit :)

Beautiful location and grounds. Staff are superb very friendly helpful and we very much enjoyed having each of the courses in Collette's explained to us. Food was outstanding we thoroughly enjoyed what felt like a culinary journey for our tastebuds. We cant wait to return again soon. We cant reccommend it enough as the service and quality of the food was second to none.

We booked a very last minute Friday night special at the Grove to enjoy a day off work and some rare English hot sun! This was the perfect location for our stay

It's really close to J19 of the M25 yet not remotely blighted by traffic noise amazingly. On arrival, after driving through amazing grounds, a friendly doorman valet parked my car for free, whilst i was smoothly checked in and a bellman took my bag to the room and showed me the way. Really impressive start, especially free valet parking.

We had the cheapest room category in the west wing but it was still impressively large and quite stylish with a nice bathroom and ESPA amenities.

Then the best bit of this hotel began.... a short walk across the car park passing the amusing topiary animals and i opened the gate into the walled garden, an oasis in a hotel. I spent the afternoon on a posh Italian sun lounger sipping cocktails and swiming in the outdoor warm heated pool, and admiring their beach volleyball and sunlounger area. It was really wonderful and I got a tan in England!

We had a lovely dinner and more cocktails in the Stables which was great - it's only a five min walk through the grounds but the hotel shuttles you there in golf buggies, a nice extra treat. Lovely views out over the golf course.

Next morning we enjoyed a great buffet breakfast in the Glasshouse which kept us full for hours, and wandered around the grounds to admire the amazing planting and water features. This whole place feels like you're in the countryside yet it's so handy to get to from London (mine was a quick jaunt round the M25, my partner took a train from Euston to Watford Junction in just 20 mins, then a five min/£8 cab to the door). I had the best pedicure ever in the Sequoia spa (thanks Amy!) whilst my partner used the wonderful gym filled with new equipment. We admired the black mosaic indoor pool but sadly had run out time to dip in, so headed off.

Final admiration factor - despite our super cheap room rate deal, they gave us late check out to 1pm to allow a gentle check out after my pedicure, much appreciated. Generally i noticed this hotel has a really good check in/out policy of noon/2pm turnaround (no doubt requiring military precision in housekeeping), rather than the new trend in places of 11am-3/4pm blackouts. Again much appreciated. I am already dreaming of my next visit - we do visit loads of posh hotels in southern England for mini treats and this has become our favourite already.

So any niggles? Just a couple, reflecting what so many TA reviewers have said on here, and really easy ones to correct. Firstly, no water on turndown, just the opportunity to pay £4.50 in the mini bar. Mineral water on turndown is pretty standard, and Hildon water was given freely at reception and in the gym, so why not in rooms? Second tiny whinge is biscuits - tea/coffee facilities had a nice little bag of shortbreads, then i noticed the minibar menu said '£4.50' again. Even cheap motels can run to a biscuit with your tea, i thought it seemed needlessly penny pinching. As for the west wing corridors, I liked them! Ok so it's a loooong hotel extension, but they'd really made an effort with quirky perspex tables all along housing different exhibits like feathers or tiny farmyard animals, plus numerous funny photo canvases of animals. Quite quirky and similar to the duck theme in their sister Runnymede Hotel (another favourite of ours). The Glasshouse dinner buffet was full for our stay (our fault for not sorting our booking, they did remind us!) but Stables were wonderful. At £49 for the buffet, i did wonder if it could be that much better than the £28 buffet at the Runnymede which is spectacular. Final whinge was aircon in rooms - we had it on lowest setting but it was a bit warm so we wondered whether it would get too hot in summer perhaps?

So yes, all in all we loved this place. Great service, wonderful setting, lovely food and drink. Highly highly recommend. Last year an american football team stayed here for the NFL game at Wembley and exclaimed on TV "WE LOVE WATFORD" and we laughed. We're not laughing now, we love Watford too!

Room Tip: balcony rooms in west wing overlooking formal gardens looked the best

I wanted to treat my wife to a meal for her birthday and knowing she loved asparagus, decided the dedicated menu at Colette's would be ideal. The meal lived up to our expectations and even myself who was previously a dubious asparagus eater was very impressed. All courses brilliant and especially the dessert infused with a hint of asparagus was a revelation! It has been a while (8 years) since we dined at Colette's remembering the over intensive service but were very satisfied with the attentive but less overbearing service this time. Normal menu maybe a little pricey but if you are pushing the boat out the quality is worth it. Our wine, a NZ Riesling was also delicious. I had also asked with the booking for a table by the window and was duly seated in a a great location with a nice touch at the end, of a plate of petit fours had piped in chocolate 'Happy Birthday'. Well done Colette's

As it happens I was sent an email advertising a two for one offer for lunch at Glasshouse the next day my wife's actual birthday. An offer to good to resist! We had a great buffet lunch in the restaurant, sitting outside on the gorgeous terrace for coffee after feeling rather stuffed full!. Fantastic price obviously with the offer, but had to ask the waiter to change the bill as they first billed us for two. They duly did this with an apology so we were satisfied. My only grumble is that the coffee is so expensive, if we had been paying full price, so perhaps it could be incorporated into the price of the buffet.

Often eat at the Grove hotel Stables restaurant so all in all would recommend the hotel to everyone.

It was a delightful dining experience. The staff were courteous, kind and thoughtful. The food was excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Perhaps the only negative comment is that it may be little over priced. We did not stay at the Hotel.
