“A good place to eat and drink”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 August 2014 via mobile

A very nice place to eat and drink.

We appreciate the size of this restaurant and they are good meals with fresh products.

The people is very friendly.

I really recommend this restaurant.

It rained when we eat in this place and we were outside, ... so ladies were very helpful!!

We stayed at the hotel in order to attend a party in Harpenden. The Old Cock is ideally placed for any event in the town, the accomodation is excellent, newly constructed and decorated and fitted out. We had a front room, No 1, despite being on the main road it is quiet, the bathroom is superb, and the breakfast great.

Room Tip: Any room is good, but Room 1 is great.

The Old Cock is a traditional old inn which should normally claim to have been a watering hole of Dick Turpin and having had three stars in the Cartwheel Guide of 1657! But not so. This is a very pleasant place, with an interesting mixture of styles. There is a bustling bar with an excellent food offer and the staff are charming and helpful. The central location is great for an afternoon stroll with plenty of options for cakes and tea! The hotel is above the pub and has been refurbished to a very high standard. Our room was small but not cramped and during daylight hours it was a little dark and gloomy as there was a venetian blind over a frosted glass window, which must have overlooked the kitchen, given the noise and smells. This didn't matter, ofcourse, after dark. The rooms are well appointed with a good bathroom and big fluffy towels. The free wifi is an added bonus. The only complaint, if it can be called that, is that despite all the careful thought put into room design they forgot to provide enough electrical sockets for the ketlle!! This means that the kettle has to be put on the floor to be plugged in whilst it boils!! Enough to put Elf and Safety into free fall!!! This is an excellent all round venue with great staff and excellent customer service.

Used to visit this hostelry years ago, nice to come back to see it has been completely refurbished. Very friendly staff , good food, really comfortable atmosphere with soft background music. Went back a second time just to be sure. Ideal base for a visit to London (30min on train) well worth a visit.

We booked for two nights and specifically requested in two e mails sent to the pub, parking for our car (as required by the pub in the booking.com conformation i.e. “Free private parking is possible on site (reservation is needed”). The pub replied that this request was “ taken care of”.

When we arrived at the pub at 17.30, there was absolutely no parking space available in the very limited size car park! So we went back again at 22.30, still no parking space was available. Nothing had been reserved for us! The pub is located directly in Harpenden High Street with double yellow lines outside! So it’s impossible to park close to it. To obtain a safe parking space for our brand new car, we parked 1 ½ miles away at our daughter's house. The next morning one space became available, so I walked 1 ½ miles back to my daughters to fetch my car whilst my wife ‘reserved’ the one space, by placing a chair in the space and additionally, standing in it!

This lack of the promised reserved parking was unacceptable! Especially knowing that they are now charging, because of a lack of local alternatives, what amounts to 4 star London Hotel rates for the room we stayed in.

The large room itself is very nice and modern, but had a window that would not close fully due to the lack of the casement fitting required to lock it! They serviced the room, but didn’t bother to make the bed! Again not acceptable.

The breakfast is very good, along with the service given at breakfast.

Just a shame about all the other things, consequently it’s not a B&B I would recommend.

Popped in for a quick drink last night as visiting the area. Bar staff totally customer focussed and clearly enjoying their work. It was quite busy, with a 30th party going on but we sat at the bar and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, didn't feel excluded. Good choice of wine. We chatted with Nicky, the landlady. She was genuinely welcoming and interested in chatting with us. Will definitely return and will be happy to try the hotel another time. As a lone female traveller, I would not hesitate to come here on my own, knowing that I would be looked after.

The rooms are very comfortable. Amy behind bar is very attentive. Other staff did not quite engage as much. The staff seemed to be arguing in front of customers which I think is unprofessional. Rooms are very modern and have nice touches. Location is good for restaurants in town. Overall this is a gem of a place and I would stay there again without a doubt. Maybe a better welcome from staff (other than Amy) would make things even better. Minimal car par king opportunities for a B an B. Please take on board honest comments to improve an already excellent bed and breakfast in Harpenden.
