“Nice Setting, Decent Pub Grub”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 June 2014

Very friendly service & decent quality food make this a good place to eat.

After we went on a local walk for a couple of hours (much recommended) we sat outside so had to choose from the 'Outdoors' menu, which was a little limited, but we both found the food to be good.

There were plenty of dogs around, so if you are a dog lover, there are a lot of willing ears to scratch and backs to stroke (and the dogs probably would appreciate some attention too!)

“Charming”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 June 2014

I've taken to this place like a duck to water.

The food is always good, the service warm and friendly, the beers / ales get the thumbs up from my other half and there are always plenty of smiley faces and waggley tails. In fact, you'll often find a pony outside too.

Sunday lunch is the best with generous portions and a sound wine list.

“No idea why so highly rated”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 April 2014 via mobile

Very average, needs a revamp decor wise, average food, doesn't deserve to be so high up on places to eat in and around Hertford.

We were recommended the house burger because of it's apparent popularity but it was quite bland and overcooked, nothing special at all.

Makes me doubt the authenticity of the previous reviews. We only visited based on the high rating but wish we hadn't, long way to go for a dry burger.

“Very pleasant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 April 2014

Interesting menu, something for everyone. Reasonably priced for Hertfordshire. Can be extremely busy so there is a need to book. Pleasantly decorated. Service is good but not intrusive. Good range of beers and wines. The soup I had last night was amazingly tasty and so was the salad I had to follow. Friends had the mango mouse to follow and raved about it. Do try if you haven't already quite sure you wont be disappointed.

“An excellent pub in a lovely rural location - delicious and interesting home prepared food from a proper chef.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 April 2014

We have been to the Candlesticks pub on many occasions and have found it to be consistently good and that is why we continue to patronise the pub. We have found the service friendly and good. Their cask conditioned beer is always excellently kept.

The only time service has been slow is, for example, on a very busy Sunday lunchtime because each meal is freshly prepared and cooked and not nuked in a microwave. The chef ensures that the menu is varied and there is often tempting new meals to try. The food is also most attractively presented too,

If you want a bog standard menu, factory prepared, microwave nuked and instantly served food then one of the many restaurants chain would be far more suitable..
