We went for the a tribute evening and had booked a room for the night.

When we arrived around 4.30pm we sat on the terrace as it was a hot afternoon, our table umbrella was broken. The sun had probably only been shining for about a week! As a previous reviewer said, there were cigarette ends in all the gaps in the paving slabs, empty cigarette packs on the ground and no smoking signs. 'You have to get your drinks from the bar' was the response when asking for one from a member of staff.

Sadly, the room was very tired and way past it's best. Had a settee in the room. The seat cover was split and fraying. One curtain was torn and just hanging. Another was held by the tie back by a safety pin! so they can't say they were not aware! Carpet was badly worn. All in all, not good. But the bed was o.k.

We tried to get into the restaurant in the morning but was turned away even though it was virtually empty and directed upstairs as if we were overspill. Breakfast was laid out in heated dishes in a corridor, self-service. The seating was random on large uncleared tables with no service or attention to detail.

When we left in the reception area we were asked if we had enjoyed your stay by a member of management and we made her aware of our comments but she just thanked us for pointing out the problems. No offer of compensation or apology, just that she would talk to the maintenance section. I think it needs a bit more than this!

We stayed here for one night and were very disappointed. The building has the potential to be lovely but it is very tired and needs serious reinvestment to bring it up to scratch. But the main problem seems to be that the staff just don't care about their guests. In advance, I had upgraded our room but we were sent to a lower grade one. It was only when I phoned reception (and was kept hanging on for several minutes) that they agreed it was not the upgraded room I had paid for. We had booked afternoon tea, expecting it to be served in the grand hall, which was very old and impressive. But because there was a wedding on, we were instead sent to a horrible, dark side room down a long dank corridor, it was like a cafe from the seventies. Just awful. The rooms are really shabby and tired, not at all good, and breakfast was dreadful. The toaster kept breaking and in the end the manager just removed it, so nobody could have any toast! The wedding did rather take over the hotel. When I ordered a cocktail in the bar, the barman said that he didn't have the ingredients - champagne, orange juice and a liqueur, which I pointed out to him on the shelf. He then agreed he did have the ingredients and very reluctantly made me the cocktail. I understand that to a hotel like this, weddings are very important, but surely this should not be at the expense of other guests?

I have been to Down Hall many many times over the past 25 years - why do i return,... simply because the setting is wonderful, and its very convenient... We have many guests staying there who all say the same thing - its inspirational when arriving with the house emerges from the trees - splendid indeed...

Sadly thats where it ends... Down Hall SHOULD be good - I WANT it to be as good as it looks when you first arrive - BUT its NOT - Management PLEASE PLEASE do something!!!

I walked out last night because of the following...

False promises - Told by staff on booking - "yes you can sit on the terrace and have dinner" - but can u make it 8.30... we arrive at 8 - NO we dont serve dinner on the terrace... there is bar menu... ( and that really quite UNinspiring )

Oh yeah - you dont get drinks service on the terrace area either...

BAD management - cigerette butts littering the terrace area - ironically next to the non smoking sign - worse still the chef and members of staff seemed to join in outside too for a crafty fag... come on people ...

Food - now im not making a comparison against international cuisine because IF so... Down Hall would fall to the lowest level imaginable - If judged by English standards ( and it pains me to say that ) AND if you are happy with below average high street chains restaurents - sadly it will still dissapoint - Down Hall - way under par - amazingly bland - un inspiring... i could go on...

Repairs - so in all fairness it must be a mamouth task to keep up to date - BUT the workmanship ( filling holes in window frames terrace area - looks so bad - its a clear reflection on mamagement's ability to choose the right person for the job )

Prices - its ok - im not moaning about that - some will say expensive BUT if you are going some where that LOOKS like Down Hall - its fine - sadly its the other essentials that let it down

Room Tip: avoid the small single rooms they are unpleasent...

Down Hall Is a glorious setting, I have stayed a few times. Rooms are a little tired but the setting makes up for it!!! Unfortunately there are hefty supplements on scallops and almost every thing else on the menu. Service was good but some of the food was under cooked. Wasn't much choice for children.

We stayed overnight following a wedding reception. A lovely old country house set in large grounds with a long drive in from the road. Had a nice room with all the usual comforts. The hotel appears to be well able to cope with running receptions, dinners and corporate events side by side and the overall service and organisation was great. The only minor hitch was dealing with a large number of guests trying to check in and out in the small reception area. Also, the hotel staff were all very pleasant and helpful.

After one Saturday night stay on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis, I found that at the hotel staff and attitude failed to live up to the glorious settings. On the plus side, the room was very spacious and had a nice view of the fountain and gardens. On the minus side, no aircon made for an uncomfortably warm night. The bed itself wasn't huge.
Two disappointments: the pool is currently closed for reburbishment. We were not informed of this at the time of booking. When I raised this with the receptionist we were told that "We probably wasn't [sic] aware of the refurbishment at the time you was [sic] booking."
We struggled to find a space in the car park due to three weddings taking place at the same time - I guess you should expect this on a standard weekend. A joyful if not quiet atmosphere.
Dinner at the grill was disappointing too, unfortunately. Most dishes on the menu come with supplements (e.g.: +£8 for a scallops starter) and the sea bass (at a supplement too) was overcooked, over salty and over-greasy. No trace of vegetables - guess what, another supplement. So we opted for "Coffee served with chocolates" (£3.95) and guess what, no chocolates turned up. Total cost of supplements for 2 courses and 2 glasses of wine was over £40. Beware of this if you intend to use the Grill room.
Finally, we looked forward to finding the bill and newspaper we had ordered for this morning, only to find neither. Reception suggested they might have been nicked. A nice final touch.

Relaxing environment and wonderful food, staff extremely helpful and friendly. The hotel itself is wonderful, shame the pool was closed for refurbishment. Excellent hotel for people with dogs, great wedding venue, hotel was busy but overall a lovely weekend had.
