We were attending a Wedding but decided to make a weekend of it so booked in on the Friday night.
A great and informative welcome from reception who were helpful at every given opportunity. Our room had obviously been recently decorated and was perfect. The bed was incredibly comfortable and there were lots of great extras - delicious biscuits, free bottled water and most importantly, free wifi. The bathroom was wonderful with a large bath, powerful shower and two basins which meant we could wash / shave and talk, meaning even more time together.
The bar area along with the drawing room were very relaxing and at all times attended by very pleasant and capable staff.
Dinner in the restaurant was delicious with plenty of staff, over-looked by the Slovakian Manager who was professional through to his finger tips. We had teamed up with some of the other Wedding guests and were not an easy party of seven (were enjoying our alcohol), but if we were being rowdy, all was coped with in excellent humour.

Breakfast the following morning (as indeed on the Sunday in a private room) was of a very high standard. Buffets can often be mediocre but this was not. The sausages and freshly made omelettes were the very best and the coffee, so often a cheap let down, delicious

The day of the Wedding was handled (from what we could see) brilliantly. The room for the service very tastefully and professionally laid out, the canapés and champagne served in the beautiful grounds for two hours, you could not fault, both for quality and service and then the Wedding breakfast itself, you could not wish for more. Food was tasty, glasses were never empty and the constant stream (mainly young) of staff at your beck and call, was commendable.
The evening ended with another buffet, all re-organised in the same room as our previous meal and three bar staff worked wonders with the huge number of guests.

I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough but as a post script, be warned as others have done, the bar prices are not cheap. One might be told they are competitive but there is not much else in the area. That, however, is a minor gripe as was my one very funny complaint, when I asked the young waitress what my starter actually was at the Wedding reception - " I don't know" and off she waltzed.
Am saving already for my next weekend there.

We had a cream tea here on Friday, June 20th to celebrate a birthday and the title of the review is actually a quote we overheard from the next table.

We arrived 5 minutes early and were asked to leave and come back as they were not ready laying the tables as there was a wedding party and the designated tea area had changed. We explained that we would wait rather than return to Reception and so were seated. 10 minutes later we were served a pot of tea for 2, disappointingly with tea bags and not tea leaves. It would have been nice to be offered a choice of fine teas.

We had pre-ordered vegetarian sandwiches and these were fine and the assortment of cakes and scones were tasty, so what went wrong ?

This is the third time we've had cream tea here and it's the third time that we have had the same experience of poor customer service, the feeling that the staff are overworked and that the failings are due to another event taking place (usually a wedding)! If the waiting staff spent their time serving rather than talking about how difficult things are then this might be the first step. The location is very picturesque and there is a feeling of grandeur until the service starts, so I'm not making excuses any more, that's it now, I'm going to find somewhere else for my cream teas.

The room was fantastic and the bed was a joy to sleep in.

Also the breakfast in the morning was well presented.

Bought a Groupon deal for an overnight Murder Mystery stay, including a 3 course meal, for £120. Down Hall is a beautiful hotel, with stunning grounds. We had an executive room, very spacious and comfortable. We had to meet in the cocktail bar and were taken into dinner by the 'cast' (actors) for a fab evening- the food was great...even though the only choice was vegetarian or non vegetarian- all 3 courses very tasty, the actors were great and we were on the winning table. Breakfast was good, plenty of choices and lots of it. The staff in the restaurant and for murder mystery were helpful and very pleasant. However, be prepared for extortionate bar prices- £2.50 for half a lime and soda, and a slightly snotty barman! overall a good evening, and I would go back.

Voucher was 2 nights for $99, but we upgraded as my partner is disabled, $30. Per night.(sorry lost pound sign) and $15 per night for dog,but we had a lovely time, I have spent more and been unhappy- see my review of Farthings hotel, but we had a great 2 days, food was consistent, grounds lovely, room great, staff very helpful, dog loved it and all very safe and enclosed. Lovely venue and we did have a great time and we drove up from Somerset, took hours, better going home, but worth it. We enjoyed a lovely weekend with my nephew from this opulent venue with my nephew and I would recommend it

Room Tip: We loved ground flor room with French windows onto grounds

Had a night away at Down Hall. The room was amazing could not fault with a really large comfortable bed. We were given a free glass of Proseco before our dinner in the evening. The Grill is the main restaurant, the food is fabulous.

The grounds are very pretty and quite large, good for a walk around. The breakfast was ample, all the usual fruit, cereals and cooked breakfast.

There is not much to do outside of the hotel as it is located on its own in a rural location. However, for a weekend treat, I would recommend going there.
