“Sunday lunch with friends”
Reviewed 2 February 2014 via mobile

Popped into Hemel old town with friends for a catch up over lunch. We chose the Olde Kings Arms as it looked very inviting from the outside. The decor inside has been newly vamped and everything looked clean and comfortable. We all chose the roasts and we were not disappointed, great portions, roast pots, roast new pots and mash but the best bit was the great selection of perfectly cooked veg, too many times pubs let themselves down with this.
We greedily had desserts, sticky toffee pudding and chocolate brownies both were light, deliciously indulgent and definitely homemade.
We all really enjoyed the visit and thought it was great value for money.

Stopped here for one night, just wanted somewhere cheap and cheerful to get our heads down, it's a great welcoming little hotel, didn't expect it to be as nice as it was and you can have breakfast for £5 it was nice too !

Visited the Old Kings arms on a Saturday night. Haven't been in here for a year or two, but what a transformation. Its clean, wine was really lovely, none of your blossom hill nastiness. The guy that now runs it has been there for about 10 weeks, and has really turned it around. He was very chatty, and the whole experience was really nice, especially amongst the craziness of the other pubs in the old town. No bouncers on the door. We were only going to stay going to stay for one, but ended up having a few more than that.
Obviously can't speak for what the rooms look like, but will certainly go back very soon.

I should have guessed something was up when told by the barman I couldn't check in until the manager had finished his cigarette. The carpet up the stairs had clearly never been vacuumed, my hand was grimey from the banister, the bedroom was miniscule with cobwebs hanging off the entire perimeter of the ceiling, there were no towels, soap or shower gel in the bathroom and the toilet seat was smeared in something brown. I had no choice but to leave. The students who appeared to be running the place seemed far more interested in their laptop than me telling them I had no intention of paying and that my colleague wouldn't be turning up now to stay in the second room we had booked. Do not stay here. Even at £40 a night, guests deserve cleanliness. A message to the manager/owners - If you can't be bothered don't advertise your bedrooms!

Room Tip: There aren't any!

No parking as advertised, no WiFi in room as advertised, no breakfast as advertised. But there was a sock over the smoke detector! Room was that small you had to shuffle sideways to get around the bed to the bathroom.
