“Good place, good value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 June 2014 via mobile

Had a 1 night Saturday night stay as we were attending a wedding nearby so didn't really get to spend any time in the hotel, bar etc.
Room 4 was "compact" but very clean with everything in it your need. Looked liked it had been recently decorated. Nice en suite as well.
Breakfast was excellent with good quality food, the guy serving (we assume the owner) made us feel very at home and was very pleasant.
I believe parking could be a problem but we were extremely lucky and managed to park on our return late Sat night on the main road opposite the hotel. Not sure if we were lucky in not getting a ticket.

Without wanting to put the place down I think there were some very minor points that would have made me change from "very good" to "excellent"
1) there was only 1 roll of toilet paper in the bathroom (that had already been started and no spare), could have been a problem!
2) there were no glasses in the bathroom or in the room. There was tea/ coffee making facilities so we used the cups.
3) no quilt on bed or in room, as it was we did not require one as the weather was very hot but as we returned after 1am to the room if one was required it could have been a problem.
4) could not get TV remote to work but this could have been me.
5) check out is at 10am, if this could be stretched to 11am on Sundays it would be great.

Even though we only used the room overnight I would recommend this hotel as it did have a really nice feel to it and if in the area again would use it again.

Fantastic little place for an overnight stay. The room was clean, well laid-out and comfortable, staff were excellent and breakfast was good also. Highly recommended next time you visit Hemel Hempstead.

When you book somewhere like Premier Inn you know what to expect. With the Olde Kings Arms that is not the case. The room was clean, the bed was comfortable, the linen was nice and there was plenty of hot water. The room we were in was up a narrow staircase and the floor boards creaked which is only to be expected for the age of the building. It has been refurbished to a good standard both in the public areas and our room. (Not many bathrooms have an inglenook fireplace as a feature). The breakfasts were very good and the evening meal, with a slightly upmarket pub menu, we had was excellent and reasonably priced. Parking at the back of the building could be a problem although we were OK both nights. There is a public car park across the newly laid (one way) high street which has a reasonable overnight charge if necessary. One of the places we were recommended to visit whilst we were in the area was the Norman church across the road. This turned out to be a fascinating visit especially as there was someone on hand to point out some of the older details of the building. It is worth a look.

I don't like staying in hotels but this was a present experience. We were welcomed by a very present man who showed us to our room. I use a walking stick and straight away he offered to change the room if we wanted. The room was bright and clean, there was tea and coffee provided. We had a meal which was delicious and we cleaned our plates. Breakfast was prompt hot and served again by present staff. My only complaint was the hight of the mirror in the bed room a bit hight for anyone siting down to dry their hair or putting make up on. But that's my only gripe. Well worth the money and I would use again and recommend the place to others.

Have just eaten at The Olde Kings Arms and felt I had to say how fab the food was. Salmon & cream cheese, fish pie (man had Beef) and choc brownie and ice cream. The beef was a bit overdone but thats the only complaint - great service - great ambience. Would go back again.

Room Tip: We didn't stay but I have to say the place looks very clean
