“Evening Reception at The Aubrey Garden Room”
Reviewed 19 September 2013

A huge thank you to Sarah Williamson at The Aubrey Park Hotel, for helping us to organise our reception after our Civil Partnership. Thanks to Charlie & Bruno for taking care of us throughout the evening, to the bar staff for keeping the family & guests lubricated and thanks to the "chef" and his crew for the wonderful buffet which went above & beyond our expectations, so much so, people were taking photo's of it! The Garden Room at The Aubrey was just perfect for our celebration and we would recommend anyone, thinking of holding any type of celebration to contact the Aubrey! Thanks again, Kate & Marie

Dear Kate B,

Why, thank you for such a glowing review. I'm pleased you and your guests enjoyed yourselves and I think several of the team here will have a smile on their faces having been mentioned personally. That's very good of you.

I hope we'll see you both back at the Aubrey Park in the future, and my congratulations and best wishes for the future.

Good
Nice, well refurbished, comfortable and clean. Friendly and well meaning staff.

Bad
Insufficient staff on the bar, slow and relatively expensive.
Restaurant, struggling to cope with 25, kept waiting for 30 mins before being seated.
Food, very disappointing. My meal could only be described as 'out of the bag/box pub grub'.
Mushy peas, a green tasteless paste, had I felt sure, never seen a pea. Fish out of a box into the frier. Cooked to a turn just very greasy and not to the std promised by the image of the restaurant on entry.

Go for the accommodation, not for service and food.

Dear Ange1o-Custode,

Thanks for your review. While it's good to read your thoughts on the rooms, a tad disappointing on the restaurant, especially when everything on the menu is bought, prepared and cooked fresh. I think I'll give the chef a sedative when he reads this one. However, I will always apologise if we get it wrong so sorry for that and hope you might try the restaurant one more time as it is getting good reviews for it food.

Look forward to seeing you back and perhaps meeting you next time?

We stayed here after going to Warner Bros studio tour and a concert in London. The hotel is in the middle of nowhere so is quiet and peaceful. Parking was not a problem and when we checked in they advised us that there was a wedding on and that the hotel was busy, they also said they had moved our room to the back of the hotel so we weren't disturbed by the wedding party noise. Reception staff friendly.
Room was clean, comfy bed, clean bathroom, the only problem we had with the room was that it was so hot even with the window wide open. When we went down for breakfast we were told that it was a busy morning because of the wedding the night before and the dining room was full but there was free tables in the bar which didnt bother us at all. The only problem was that the food seemed to be rushed out and looked a little under cooked, maybe they need more staff on at busy times ie weddings.
But overall a decent hotel.

Dear Battygirl53,

Great name. Many thanks for your review and pleased to read you enjoyed your visit to Aubrey Park and of course, I hope you'll think of us next time you visit the area or London. Just a comment regards breakfast, Sunday's can get a tad busy later in the morning as wedding groups often arrange to all meet for breakfast together and as many people enjoy a lie-in on Sundays there is often a short time when the restaurant is busy, so I'm pleased you were looked after well.

Like the bear (is it a bear?) in the bar. Hope he/she enjoyed breakfast.

Fantastic hotel in stunning surroundings, rooms were nice, whole place spotlessly clean. the breakfast was really good value for money, it was a continental and full English breakfast buffet. 1st morning breakfast went without a problem. Sunday morning there was a party of wedding guests, who seemed to have priority, they received their tea and coffee with their breakfast, we had to wait for ours, whilst the buffet was replenished, then we had to ask for it. other than this minor issue, the service was fantastic and would most definitely go there again.

Dear paul779,

Thank you for your review, a 5/5 is always something to cherish and we never take it for granted, so many thanks for that. Very pleased you enjoyed the hotel, the service and the surroundings, you should try and stay in the spring (if not before of course) when the woods around the Iron Age settlement are bursting with Bluebells, a truly stunning sight.

Thanks again and I look forward to seeing you back soon.

Stayed here for a wedding back in June...The hotel has some good points but we felt these were overshadowed by a number of issues we experienced.

We arrived after most of the other guests and was pleased to find that parking was no issue - lots of spaces to choose from and only a short walk to the hotel.

On entering reception, we then queued for 15 minutes to check in (despite only having 3 others waiting in front of us) - and subsequently missed the canapes and drinks reception! The girl on reception did not smile once nor did she make any attempt at engaging in any conversation with any of us, instead choosing to stare at her computer screen. Whilst we were checked in relatively easily, she was particularly rude to a guest in front of us, claiming he had no booking and asking if he was even in the right hotel...This was before admitting there were numerous rooms free so it wasn't actually a problem anyway! Ultimately nothing too disasterous occured during check in but we certainly didn't feel welcomed or valued as paying guests. (Also, it's useful to know that they insist on taking an extra £50 off your credit card upon arrival to cover any additional costs 'just in case' - this is refunded when you leave (but takes 3 days to reappear on your card) and seems rather pointless when they already have your card details from the booking. Again, not an issue for us but I suspect some people don't have a spare £50 waiting around!

The actual wedding meal was lovely, although we were slightly dismayed to find that only half the tables were served tea and coffee before it was put in the corner of the room and we were left to help ourselves. (Or we would have been, had we not been herded out the marque so they could tidy up - whether this was poor planning or a lack of communication between staff I don't know, but still not the sort of service you expect at a wedding!) Furthermore, after the wedding ended at 1am, the hotel bar stopped serving us drinks at around 1.30am, despite the wedding party having been promised it would stay open as long as we were buying drinks!

The hotel was in the middle of being refurbished during our visit and as such we had a full 10 minute walk up and down 2 floors of the hotel to get to our room. This wasn't really an issue for us (I took my high heels off in the end!), but older guests will certainly struggle to cope with this and there was no one to assist with our luggage.

On finding our room, we were pleased to discover it was clean and spacious. In fact, we had a fantastic night's sleep and the black out curtains were fab! However, the following morning we discovered all of the tea and coffee facilities were on a tray swimming in water. At this point we decided it wasn't worth asking for them to be replaced and headed down to breakfast instead...what a mistake!

Given that the wedding had been booked for 1.5 years and our rooms booked for 6+ months, the hotel was in no way whatsoever prepared for the number of guests at breakfast. We found a (dirty) table and asked for it to be cleared for us. This was done promptly but it then took 15 minutes for a drinks order to be taken and a further 15 minutes after this we stood up and went to find one of only two waiters on duty to take our food order. He apologised and explained they were very busy. Our food subsequently took ANOTHER 30 minutes to arrive. In this time, we headed to the continental buffet to find there was no croissants / bread left and the kitchen staff informed us they had run out! On complaining about these issues to our waiter, his only excuse was that the hotel hasn't expected so many guests to come to breakfast?!?

There were a number of positives about this hotel - ample car spacing, lovely rooms and beautiful grounds BUT too many customer service issues and a lack of communication let it down. We paid £65 for our medicore stay here and personally I'd have much rather paid more and received better service...

Dear Kate M,

Thanks for your review and your comments. Rather than run through all your points, suffice to say that since June (seems a long time ago now) the refurbishment is long finished and some great new people are now working with us in the areas you highlight, so, from recent reviews, much of your content is in the past.

Sunday breakfasts are notorious in hotels in that the majority of guests arrive for breakfast within a very short timeframe after a lie-in, as such, we've introduced a full breakfast buffet to alleviate any congestion from this.

As you live quite locally, do pop in and check us out again. Maybe we could even get to meet if you let me know when you're coming in.

Recent refurbishment to a good standard, room had new bathroom, decoration and opening window. Very good cooked breakfast. Hotel seems to have gone for good value prices for a hotel of this quality to ensure there are always plenty of peple staying. It seems to work. Wedding reception on Friday night had a loud disco but didn't go on too late, so not an issue. Will stay here again.

We stayed that the Aubrey Park Hotel after visiting the Warner Bros Studios a few miles away. We had two rooms, a twin and a double catering for us and our two Sons . The staff were very polite and well presented, the rooms clean, tidy and comfortable.
Although we had not booked in at the restaurant they managed to seat us . The food was to a good standard and well priced.

I would recommend this hotel to families that are visiting the near-by Harry Potter Studios and would stay again if in the area.
