“Convenient and Adequate”
Reviewed 12 August 2011

We have stayed here several times when visiting family who live nearby. The surrounding area is not too built up and the motorway is just far enough away not to be obtrusive. On our last stay the bathroom had not been properly cleaned before our arrival. The bathroom of this room is also in dire need of refurbishment. Otherwise the hotel is generally good, staff helpful and the breakfast tasty. We found the M & S Food shop just outside to very handy

This hotel is conveniently placed -near M1 and about 5mins drive from the railway station. The room was spacious and clean. The swimming pool was enjoyed by the children. Breakfast was plentiful -tasty and lots of choice -kids loved it!!! Staff were helpful. Would recommend this hotel.

having booked an inclusive trip to visit an Art Exhibition with a travel company we learned we were to stay at the Holiday Inn Hemel Hempstead. As two elderly ladies we had booked a twin room. On arrival we were allocated room 203, we were astonished to find a 4' double and half a sofa made up. We contacted reception who informed us that this filled their twin criteria!!! needless to say it definitely did not fill our criteria, they offered to come and make the sofa bed into a double. When I pointed out that we had booked and paid for a twin-bedded room, they said they would come back to me. After my speaking to a further two members of staff they finally agreed to move us to a twin bedded room. The rest of the hotels services were very average, carvery [nothing remotely hot] cold bacon and eggs etc etc. at breakfast, although the proper cold food was fine. After ordering a pot of coffee for two a teapot and two mugs arrived!
We have learned in future to check that a twin room means a twin bedded room and not some makeshift arrangement.

We stayed here on business for a week and must say the service in the hotel was excellent right from check in we were made to feel welcomed and Ivan on reception gave his time for us with the right attitude towards his work. meals were good although we were limited to the set menu (as the company was paying). rooms had all we needed and were clean but the internet is a bit pricey at £5 per hour of use. Wouldn't mind using the hotel again in future.

Stayed at this holiday inn after a concert we did not check in until very late in the evening and this was very swift unfortunately too late for a drink in the bar which looked inviting the twin room was very well furnished and spotlessly clean had tea and coffee making facilities toilettries supplied a hairdryer and a trouser press with a very comfortable bed the breakfast was a buffet style and had an excellent choice of food the staff were very friendly and efficient. Did not have time to use the health suite would definately stay at this hotel again

As you can tell by my headind i was one of the "Raucous" wedding guests. Far fom it. After a 3 hour drive from the north,we found the hotel easily from the moterway and parked up. We were meet with a friendly smile and face at reception and had a hassell free check in. We had a ground floor room with a window to keep a check on the car,in the free car park which was very handy. The room was claen and tidy with all you need,Large freeview TV,Air Con,working hot shower, double bed with a selection of pillows and stocked mini bar. Any small gripes a missing can from mini bar and unlocked door to joining room were dealt with quickly by reception. All areas of hotel were clean and tidy and all staff happy to help. We meet with friends for drinks on Friday night at the bar, prices are a bit steep but we are down south now,and tere are ways around this nudge nudge wink wink
Breakfast was a self service style, after giving your room number in you are directed to a table. You could choose from a continental or full English, all freshly cooked with all the breakfast trimmings.
The Wedding was Lovely and the staff had turned the restaurant into a perfect wedding breakfast room. The meal and speechs were handled great by the staff.
So to the night time do
It was a summer wedding in the last weekend of June with a disco. Any one who complains about noise would moan at fireworks on 5th November or Church bells on 25th december.
A 12 finish was early in my eyes, and the last four songs were slow ones,i know i was dancing with the wife.
The hotel has to cater for all sorts of people, maybe its a case of cant suit all the people, all of the time.
Excellent job by all,We would return.
One last thing...There was no bible in the room, but you could get xxx rated films on the tv,how times are changing.

The background to this review is that I've stayed here several times over the last few years, usually on a Friday, getting up early on Saturday. Generally, it's quite good, better than most Holiday Inns in the UK. However, there can be problems specifically at the weekends.
The location is just off the M1, about half a mile away, which makes it useful for London or Luton Airport even. There's a petrol station next to it, which is a good thing as it has an M&S, this means you can have a convenient alternative to what the hotel offer. It is quite some distance from Hemel Hempstead town centre.
The rooms are about the right size for a Holiday Inn, with wooden paneled curtains which lend a modern feel to the place. Beds are comfortable, rooms have air-con. There's a table for your laptop, bring a dongle as they charge a fortune for internet access (£16 to connect at time of writing). The TV has a few pay channels, but not many. There's a mini-bar and a kettle. The bathrooms lack the wow factor but are functional.
The food here is about canteen level. They try to cover all the bases with the variety and end up not being any good at any of them. It's the usual Holiday Inn menu.
Book early enough and you can get great value for money, you can get rooms for £43, which is very good for a full service hotel.
The problem with this hotel is that they have some weekend functions. When I last stayed, there was a very loud disco in the basement, the bass of which, I could EASILY hear over my TV on the first floor. This thumping went on until midnight, which is unacceptable as it interfered with my comfort. It also stopped me from sleeping (I was getting up early). The annoying thing about this is that the hotel is putting money before the guests' comfort; events bring in money. They wouldn't get away with it midweek as business money talks louder that leisure money. Clearly at weekends, depending on factors decided by the hotel, you risk not getting a good night's sleep - which raises the issue of whether they remain a "hotel" at these times.
Having said that, it's not every weekend, but that one experience drops the rating to poor. My previous stays keep it from terrible.
Checked out 6am, wondering whether to use an alternative in future.

Room Tip: Take earplugs at weekends!
