“A decent hotel”
Reviewed 15 September 2011

We stayed at the Bobsleigh for one night in July. The hotel itself is in a decent location and although some people might see it not being in the centre of Hemel Hempstead as a disadvantage, we found that this resulted in a nice peaceful night's sleep. Although the rooms were looking a bit dated, the cleanliness was excellent and the beds were comfy. The breakfast was also good, with a choice of hot and cold options. The staff that we dealt with were helpful and very polite. Nothing exceptional, but a decent hotel that we'd stay at again.

We had an overnight stay at the Bobsleigh last month as we were attending a family wedding in Hemel. We were a little apprehensive as some of the hotel reviews were less than complimentary! However we need not have worried - our rooms were pleasant & spotlessly clean. Breakfast in the conservatory was lovely with an excellent choice of fruit cereals & the usual hot options.
We found all the staff pleasant & helpful - they even arranged for us to check in early so that we could use our room to change into our wedding clothes!
we would certainly stay at the Bobsleigh again.

I have never stayed in a Macdonald hotel before and was wary of how much it'd cost but to my suprise it was £35 each for a twin room with breakfast. The room was a fair size with an ensuite bathroom and was clean and tidy. As for the restaurant the evening meals were lovely but very expensive. The bar was also way overpriced. If you book into this hotel eat out in the evening you'll save yourself a packet.

This hotel is horrible. Dirty and outdated. I came away covered with small bug bites after just one night's stay. No internet - you have to pay for a BT open zone which then barely works, food is awful. They offer to let you order room service for breakfast but I was then informed by the front desk that I should ignore the offer and "just get dressed and come down for breakfast in the restaurant because we're very busy in the mornings so your breakfast will most likely arrive very late." The shower barely worked - almost no water pressure and an offensive smell permeated the place. I had no choice in staying here - a client put me here - but given the choice I will not return.

Not only will I never stay here again - I'll actively alert others to avoid this place like the plague.

I have stayed in the Bobsleigh twice now, and expect to be doing so again later this year. It is conveniently positioned for the Hemel Hempstead area.
We have always found the staff very friendly and welcoming, and they have promptly answered any queries we have had. Rooms were comfortable, and reasonably spacious and clean though there is one small section of corridor which has had an unpleasant odour to it on both occasions we have stayed. The main bar is open late, and even when closed the Night Porter is always pleased to open the bar in the reception lounge area.
I haven't eaten a main meal here so am unable to comment on the menu.

On arrival with my hungry family we asked for sandwiches at 2pm and were told the kitchen was shut - even though the blurb said food was served until 2:30pm. We then tried the room service which was, apparently available 24 hrs - no luck there either! We went to our room - you only had to follow the indescribable, sickening smell - on entering we found the floor had not been hoovered, the wall lamps were hanging off the walls, dust everywhere and on first glance a fairly clean shower room. Although there were plenty of staff, I don't think they broke a smile once! The grounds were kept well but we will not be returning.

I stayed one night following a family wedding. The hotel has a traditional older building and some newer annexes. I stayed in one of these annexes with a view onto the front car park and road. The road noise was a little intrusive, but not a problem with earplugs. The bed was comfortable and the room clean with some nice touches like free toiletries and some good tea and coffee options. The TV signal was very poor - just about watchable, but not great. The room is heading towards needing redecoration, but for the price (£60 including a cooked breakfast), it was fine. Some of the corridors are looking very run down, with a rather unpleasant damp/chemical smell (perhaps coming from the laundry room?). Other relatives reported being happy with their rooms, although one relative was in a very small single in the old part of the building and requested to be moved. I was able to see the disabled room, while I assisted a relative - this appeared comfortable with good accessible bathroom facilities. Just of note, this room has two single beds on wheels which can be moved together - the wheels were a bit lively, so if you need a very solid base for transferring, you might want to enquire about this in advance.
The wedding was nicely managed - ceremony in a formal room in the old house (the breakfast room in the morning), photos in the nice garden area (useful tables and chairs for people to rest on), and then dinner and dancing in the round function room. The catered wedding food was nice (vegetarian option pretty average), and the staff generally very helpful and pleasant. One member of staff was not very understanding when I tried to explain why I kept shutting a door (as an elderly relative was cold), but otherwise staff couldn't have been more helpful.
The wedding party was all very well behaved, but I do wonder how it would be to stay in a hotel as a non wedding guest when most of the hotel is taken up by one party. Might not be much fun.
Breakfast had a good mix of buffet style hot and cold food (usual hot stuff, cereals, fruit, juice, pastries etc). Tea and coffee, as well as toast were served at the table by nice staff.
Check out was smooth. In the overspill cark park I spotted an old traditional swimming pool with a greenhouse type roof. It would be lovely if this hotel could be given the overhaul it deserves and the pool brought back into service.
