Owner description: When the Grand Union Canal was cut though Apsley, it put the town on the main trade route to London. Today, the old towpath serves as a wonderful cycle route. Apsley was once an important centre for paper manufacture. The Grand Union Canal transported huge amounts of raw materials on barges to the paper mills here. Full-scale production of paper only ceased in the Second World War. Today, the old industrial buildings are now cafés, pubs and a visitor centre - and make a great day out.

“Nothing special”

Grimy place, lots of history but nothing special now. Don't even understand how Apsley has a page on tripadvisor... Although there is always the "private" shop ;)

“Pleasant canal and basin/marina”
Reviewed 24 February 2014

Very pleasant walk into town, but a bit muddy after the awful rain. A few shops and restaurants, and the paper mill pub. Also a paper making museum, but didnt go there!

“Cycling the Grand Union around Hemel Hempstead”
Reviewed 10 November 2013

Starting from the Holiday Inn which is right on the canal, you can cycle through Apsley - there's some great pubs on the way, including The Three Horseshoes. You can come off the tow path and get to Ashridge Estate which is also a great place to cycle. We've done this a few times now, including with kids and always enjoyed it. On a summer's day you feel transported back in time when you pass the locks and can see cricket being played on one of the many greens along the way. Autumn has its own attraction with the water reflecting the changing colours of the trees. Good vegetarian restaurant and Italian opposite the Holiday Inn - and there's the Candy Barge selling all sorts of old-fashioned sweets.
