This is the first time we have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express and were mildly suprised. It is a modern hotel and the rooms are nicely decorated. There is a nice sized flat screen TV and a very comfortable bed with a choice of soft or firm pillows.
This very clean hotel is just across the road from the railway station, which makes for easy access for a day trip to London. Also there is a nice walk along the canal bank to nearby eateries and shops.
The buffet breakfast was excellent and included fruit, cereals, toast, scrambled eggs and sausages.
Overall, we had a great experience and would certainly return here.

Taxi from airport costs around 90 pounds. Arrive by train with lugage is very difficult.

Its it a good hotel and good employes but is it NOT a good option if you are a tourist who wantx to visit London once it is far from london. It is a good hotel if you wanna visit Apsley, Hemel Hrmpstead or do something around.

There is a supermarket 3min walking from hotel and main train station is 5min by taxi from hotel.

Stayed here for one night on business and was expecting nothing more really than a bed and bathroom but was pleasantly surprised. The reception area is nice with comfy seats to relax (or wait for colleagues as I did) and sky news to watch.
Check in was smooth and fuss free and the receptionist was very friendly.
The room exceeded my expectations; spotlessly clean with a double and sofa bed and a unit to hang clothes. And, more lamps and lights than you would know what to do with! If you are looking for fancy frills and personal touches this isn't the place. If you're looking for a clean, modern room with choice of pillows and a piping hot shower with proper water pressure, stay here.

We didn't eat at the restaurant as prices looked a bit steep but it did look fairly busy in the evening. Instead, we popped across the road to the pub which had a really good atmosphere. There is bar food available downstairs, which appeared very popular, but we went upstairs to the restaurant. Great food at a reasonable price. The receptionist also mentioned vegetarian, indian and italian restuarants along the nearby canal so you won't go hungry.

We weren't expecting much for breakfast but again was pleasantly surprised. You can help yourself to sausage, scrambled eggs and toast or usual selection of cereals, yoghurts and pastries etc. It was all fresh and prefectly edible. Kept me going for for hours!!

There was a mix up with the bill on check out but this was quickly resolved with the added touch of the guest services manager writing down his name and number should there be any further problems.

If I had one tiny, tiny gripe it would be that the instructions regarding parking fees are not entirely clear. I paid £5 but even now not sure if I should have done. As I said, small gripe during what was a very enjoyable stay. Would certainly consider staying again if I was planning a trip to London, given location of train station across the road.

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel on TripAdvisor. It is with great pleasure that we read your comments and that you found your stay enjoyable and our team friendly. I’m delighted that you enjoyed our free breakfast buffet – we are adding even more products very soon.

We apologise that the car parking instructions were not clear, we are in the process of having some amendments made to the signage, car parking is free of charge for all hotel residents, you just need to obtain a voucher from reception to display in your car.

I have forwarded your comments to the Management of The Paper Mill where you dined during your stay; I know they share our vision of providing the very best guest experience and value for money as possible.

Thank you once again and we hope to welcome you again sometime soon in the not too distant future.

We have stayed at this Express Holiday Inn a few times over the years as it is perfectly located opposite the road to Apsley train station and situated in nice area by the canal, with a good pub in walking distance and across the bridge of the canal in the Marina is a great Indian restuarant. We booked early and got room for £44 a night, with breakfast included - choice of scramble eggs, sausages, cereals, fruit, yoghurts, toast etc, you certainly don't go hungry. Free 6 hours wi-fi a day was fab. Pleasant bar/seating area. Room good size, clean, bed comfy, choice of firm or soft pillows. Free parking too.

We frequently stay here as it's near our elderly mother in a St Albans care home, and also when we want to get up to London, which is so easy from Apsley station opposite. We are very familiar with the Holiday Inn Express format, and we have stayed in several around the country. This is probably the best we've found for spaciousness, staff efficiency and friendliness, and general overall cleanliness and standards of decoration. We usually try to get a double room with a sofa bed so we can eat a picnic bought from Sainsburys just down the road if we arrive at an inconvenient time or have already eaten out that day, and that also gives you space to spread out and read or watch TV without one of you sitting on the bed.

Prices of the room vary depending on whether you book in advance at a flexible rate or not. Last week we stayed without booking as we had an elderly mum emergency, and we paid £86, but sometimes it's as low as £56 (non-flexible). Officially they say they charge £5 per night for the carpark, you have to get a ticket from Reception to put in your car anyway, but at weekends they don't usually bother. We have spent a weekend in London, going up on the train, and have been able to leave the car there even though we only spent the Friday night at the hotel.

It's usually pretty quiet even if you're facing the road, we've never been very bothered by the traffic or the trains.

Breakfast is standard HIE stuff, ample if not very exciting. The dining room is very big but the buffet area can get terribly busy if there's a crowd in. There's a bar, snooker table, and meals in the hotel if you want them, but we recommend eating or drinking at the lively Paper Mill pub opposite, or in Calzone Italian on the other side of the canal past the Marina to the right, which is more intimate (see reviews elsewhere on Tripadvisor.) There's also a veggie café/restaurant next to Calzone, which looks nice but we haven't tried it yet. Walks up and down the canal are pleasant if you're stiff from a long journey.

There's not a great deal more to see in Apsley, and it's too far to walk from here to Hemel Hempstead, so if you want a town centre setting this isn't the place. But otherwise we shall go back again and again, I'm sure.

must say greay value for money, staff were friendly and hotel was both clean and very presentable. included in your stay is free use of the swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna steam room and gym. The pool was a little shallow but can't really grumble as facilities, were again very clean, free of charge and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Also ideal place to stay if you are flying early from Luton and live hours away like we did. We were disappointed that there was no hot chocolate in the room but this is typical for a holiday inn and also the food was very expensive as was the garage accross the road but overall an excellent hotel, I would return.
