“Bit of luxury for a cheap price”
Reviewed 24 September 2008

Stayed here for 1 night before flying out of Stansted Airport. Hotel is conveniently located off the M25 (5 minutes) and benefits from a canalside location. Hotel is about 2 miles from the centre of Hemel Hempstead but closer to the pretty village of Kings Langley (fish and chip shop highly recommended!!)

Parking at the hotel is safe and secure for a fee of £5 which is payable on check out. I must admit having stayed at numerous budget type hotels the Holiday Inn Express surpasses them all.

The rooms are of a good size with lovely double bed, bathroom with power shower, tea coffee facilities and teletext tv. Room and hotel were spotless and you could tell it was a farily new building.

One thing the Holiday Inn Express benefits from is a free continental breakfast which is an added bonus. Quite varied too with fresh baguettes, toast making facilities, cereals, yoghurts, fresh fruit, cakes and a hot drinks machine. All of which is served buffet style.

We only paid £29 for 1 night which I consider excellent value for money.

Would definitely stay here again especially if i was travelling from Luton Airport as its only up the road.

The express by holiday inn in Hemel hempstead (try saying that fast after a cream cracker) is in a pleasant enough location south of the town. it is at the side of a canal and surrounded by some exclusive flats which in turn are surrounded by some lower end of the market houses, though to be fair this isn't a rough town.
A few things that I found to be comment worthy for this hotel with standard holiday inn express rooms.
The entrance is on the ground floor at the back, or underground from the front and reception is one floor up with a tiny slow lift.
The car parking is barely adequate and if you need an accessible space for your wheelchair, get there early, or insist that they cone one off for you, also I found the car park confusing with a mixture of poor signage and barriers with no instructions of how to gain entry, the initial impulse is to park in one of the numbered bays, but these do not belong to the hotel.
Then the hotel will quite cheerfully let you pay £10 into a machine to park overnight, or £5 at the desk but there is no signage or indication that you can save this £5 and personally I object to paying anything to park in a hotel at which i have paid to sleep.

Reception staff were helpful - very helpful in fact and the room has the new generation of TV which is easier to get porn on than news channels.
The bed was saggy and needs replacement but room comfort was overall as you expect from the brand.

Local food takeaways are plentiful half a mile down the road but decent restaurants will have you driving into town or a better option would be to drive into Berkhamsted and hang out with the b list celebs that frequent the area.

Breakfast is well below the express average but is "complimentary" so I guess they can throw at you what they want - not the worst though and the croissants were warm and fresh.
Checkout was easy and fast with a cheery thank you from the very pleasant ladies behind the desk.

This Holiday inn express is newly built and as a result still looks clean and tidy.

The bedroom i had was on the 3rd floor and was nice. Basically the standard HIE type room but with new LED lights. Small Shower room with toilet. Everything was in order although the air con unit made a racket all night.

The downsides to this trip were the cost of Parking. There is a £5 per night charge which i think is a little excessive for an Express outside of central London. Most other Express's are free. Also on Saturday morning they had a faliure of a fuse which meant no free continental breakfast (Although they had juices etc - no food as such), but to be honest i was not that hungry anyway.

There is a nice pub accross from the hotel right on the lock, which serves a very nice evening meal, and the location is quite nice. To find the hotel from the M25, exit at Jun 20 and follow the signs for Kings Langley. Stay on the road into St Albans and you will come accross it after 10 minutes on your left. If your coming from the M1, exit at Junction 8, follow the road to Hell's roundabout and then signs towards Kings Langey / Apsley. Again about 10/15 mins depending on traffic.

Overall, not a bad stay. if you can get a deal then go for it. Check the price of the holiday inn which is local and if there is no difference and you are just getting your head down, then head over to that and save the £5.00 parking charge !!
