“Wedding at Shendish”
Reviewed 27 October 2011

My daughter has just had her wedding at Shendish Manor, and what a fabulous setting for a wedding, the wedding co-ordinator was brilliant, as was the photographer, and disco...
We had many lovely comments regarding the lovely dinner, and also the evening buffet
All in all we all had a fantastic day, so a huge thank you to the chef, and all the staff for making my daughter and son-in laws day perfect...

We stayed at Shendish Manor to attend a family wedding. The staff were attentive and the house and grounds absolutely great for a special occasion. We spent the night in a Manor room overlooking the grounds. The room itself was spacious and nicely decorated. Unfortunately although the bed was a good size it had one of the hardest mattresses I have ever slept on.
We also thought the hospitality tray would have been better if there were more than 3 little pots of milk - not even enough for 2 drinks each.

Room Tip: check the bed before accepting the room.

Shendish Manor Hotel is less than an hour away for anyone living in North London so very handy for a one-night/weekend break away, which ours was. It's not quite a countryside retreat but its grounds are large enough to stroll around half an hour and provide pretty views from the bedroom. A shame that on those strolls one can find discarded plastic chairs tucked behind bushes or a rusty wheelbarrow - perhaps Shendish can employ a gardener or handyman to tuck this stuff away?

Anyway, the bedroom itself (we went for a Superior Manor House Double) was stylishly decorated with an elegant bathroom - great rainfall shower! The only real letdown here was the fact that what looked like a fantastic kingsize bed was, upon inspection, two beds pushed together. Not impressed - is that really a superior double? Bed discrepancies notwithstanding, the bedroom had a lovely view, was comfortable and a pleasure to spend time in.

If you are going to make a booking - particularly on a Saturday night - DO make sure you ask whether a wedding will be on. We weren't told this, and though reception staff told us upon arrival that there would be a reception taking place with music on until midnight, we weren't aware just how loud the music would be! (Suppose this was a good thing for the actual wedding guests.......).

A second and final tip - be aware that asking for breakfast brought to the bedroom will incur a £7 charge. Expected, perhaps, but reception staff only informed us of this at check-out not when we initially rang to ask if it was possible.

All in all, Shendish Manor Hotel is a nice getaway, close to scenic Hertfordshire countryside and provides a very decent English breakfast. Just watch out for late-night wedding festivities and beds being pushed together!

We held two training events in the contemporary Apsley Suites. The meeting room space worked really well and the rooms were set up perfectly to meet our requirements. The helpful staff really made the event a success, nothing was too much trouble and there was always somebody available to help. We will definitely be back.

We went for afternoon tea which itself was very good but we waited for over an hour before it was served. We were the ony 2 people having tea outside whilst in just a party of 6 adults and children were having a meal. Dont know how they can be so bad but presume the locals are aware and dont come. Pity.

I would like to thank the staff for helping organise my mum's 80th birthday lunch. They were all so helpful and nothing was to much trouble. The meal and service was 1st class. We were taking in our own birthday cake and they laied out a table for it which looked lovely. The surrounding were lovely, have never been there before, and did everything over the internet, and was not at all disappointed. I would highly reccommend The Shendish for that special occassion.

We chose shendish manor for our anniversary - not far from home, nice grounds, and good decor. We got all that. We also got a wedding reception which meant the whole staff team were unable to provide a satisfactory level of service to its non-wedding guests. We arrived at 2pm and checked into room 13, which was large and well-decorated. We popped down for a quick bite and waited 30 mins for drinks and an hour for the pizza, all the while surrounded by headless chickens preparing for the wedding. I mean yelling across the room, dragging tables, etc. General air of panic. I asked whether we should expect the rest of our stay to continue in this vein, and the embarrassed staff member didn't charge us for the pizza, so all remedied. I don't mind a cock up if one is ready to make amends. We changed our dinner reservation to a later time and went for a pleasant walk.
Dinner time, we went down to a portable speaker pumping out sting, staff racing around, and had to practically grapple someone to the floor to seat us. Our drinks arrived 40 mins after we went down. There was much explaining about the wedding, the group next door, and the new £25/head dinner system if one had prepaid. Shendish, I don't care what you're saying to me; all I'm hearing is that you can't cope with normal guests trying to enjoy what you claim to offer. When it finally arrived, I had the lamb with dauphinoise potatoes that had barely seen the oven. Not good enough. My advice: stop trying to make money on events and stick to providing a service to match the lovely surroundings.
