“If you're thinking of a function here - Forget it!”
Reviewed 8 July 2012

We were here for a wedding paying for two nights, and were part of the bridal party.

Firstly - No hot water whatsoever at any point during our stay in the £130 per night rooms we had.
Called to query and were told "sorry it'll be turned on now, wait for ten minutes and it wil be there." - Three hours and one missed breakfast later - No hot water!

Bar staff pretty much either rude or useless during the function...

Beer in function room kept in kegs corridor outside room warming up nicely throughout the day - When guests in desperation went to the 'proper' hotel bar for a cold beer they were told they had their own bar and to get their (Warm!) drinks there.

People actually had to argue in order to PAY for a (Cold) beer at the bar in the hotel they were paying to stay at!

The bar in the function room regularly ran out of - Coke, lemonade, southern comfort, vodka and even ICE - Not to mention other drinks that are maybe less popular such as DRAUGHT LAGER - A total shambles from start to finish!

The two fridges they did have for bottled drinks and juices were not even plugged in, and when you pointed out the drinks you paid for were warm you were told that "Sorry, it has only just been put in" as an excuse for the temperature - No offer of ice (As they had none!) or a replacement!

When you had the temerity to ask for your vodka and (Totally flat as the mineral bottles were left open all night!) coke with ice you were told they'd ran out of ice?
If you insisted on a cold drink it was (Eventually!) got from the proper hotel bar - BUT only for your drink, AND after a long wait plus a load of hassle, AND then the person behind you had to go through the very same process as all that was brought would literally be a single cube of ice for your drink only! - Who manages these people?

Breakfast featured bacon & sausages that might have caught a 'glimpse' of the grill on the way to the buffet, but beyond that were less 'tanned' than I am when I open my Christmas presents in December - I might be odd, but I like my food at least partially cooked!

Putting aside the horrendous bar service, awful breakfast (one of which I missed as there was no hot water!) and general apathy, the icing on the cake was the wedding the day after the wedding reception I attended.

At 08.45 I was awoken to 300+ Hindu celebrants of a wedding taking place later that day right outside my window in the car park outside reception.
Five of them had drums so large they had to wear straps to hold them up. There were numerous tambourines and there were literally hundreds of chanting singers!

We'd not gone to bed until after well after midnight!

Apparently I got off lightly staying in the 'old' part of the hotel as the bridal party being celebrated later that day party were in the 'new' bit, and there was a parade of drums, singing and all the noise I'd heard going up and down the corridors in that part of the hotel at 08.00 to get that bridal particular party up!

The communal reception area for all paying guests was decimated by having half the seats removed to accomodate a nine foot high statue of a Hindu God?

When the staff were asked why this was allowed to happen considering the other guests who'd paid to use the facilities, they just said "Sorry they hired the room only and we don't know what is planned." - Not even nearly good enough!

This subsequent party were allowed to do what they wanted, wake up every person in the hotel, and we were offered (After complaining!) 10% off - I didn't pay at all for the second day.

The manager should've been out within seconds of the drums starting to resolve that for the guests who were still sleeping - It went on for well over half an hour!

The attitude was that your day is over, we've had your money, time to placate the next bunch - We'd all paid £130 per night to be essentially told to go away!

If you are (Mad enough!) getting married here, ensure you stipulate your event down to the last detail - Including extravagances such as being allowed a decent nights sleep, food that wont place undue strain on your immune / digestive system, and escoteric luxeries such as hot water to have a shower in the morning of your wedding.

Appalling!

I'm a regular here thanks to a good corporate rate, and I generally find it good value with rooms well appointed for the money. Food I cannot comment on as despite many stays I have never had dinner here as there are plenty of pubs and canal side restaurants nearby that I've always preferred to venture out to.

The venue is also popular for functions which is what has prompted me to write a report, as subject to where your room is situated, you may suffer a noisy and sleepless night as I just have.

The hotel is in two sections, the old manor house, and the newer annexe where most of the rooms are located. In the newer annexe the rooms are of a good size, adequately appointed and a fairly typical "corporate" style of room layout on two floors with garden or car park outlooks, and from my experience little or no noise intrusion.

Rooms in the manor house however can be larger, more traditionally furnished and you may feel as though you've enjoyed an upgrade, which for some rooms you might be right, BUT, check and ensure that there are no functions on otherwise you may risk the intrusion of a noisy reverberation of the music downstairs until well after midnight as was the case last night, and should you not have the benefit of a rear garden facing room then you may experience the ongoing noise of the partygoers enjoying themselves in the car park long after the music finally stops until way after

On this latest visit I was concerned as I'd forgotten my alarm clock and some hotel wake up call services cannot always be relied upon, however here it wasn't a problem as the front facing manor house rooms will benefit from a steady flow of delivery trucks from around 6.30am, and their reversing bleepers are not dissimilar to an alarm clock going off, and if that doesn't get you then perhaps the chirpy early morning banter between fellow truck drivers will.

So, a good value hotel, but avoid front facing manor house rooms unless you enjoy a diesel early morn chorus.........

Room Tip: Anywhere but front facing manor house

Used Shendish Manor for our Year 11 school Prom. Maria was extremely helpful organising the event from start to finish. Excellent venue / setting and excellent service. Charlotte and her fellow staff were very helpful on the day and buffet food was perfect for 160 fifteen year old students!! Will definitely be returning next year.

Shendish Manor is a delightfull combination of 19th century manor hoise with a modern hotel annexe grafted on. Unusually, it pulls this off

The hotel is clearly a fabourite for functions and has good quality food. The bar is no more pricey than any other hotel, buy overlooking the gardens it feels worth it.

The green open spaces aroind the hotel, beloved of the golfing community give a feeling of space and exclusivity. Highly recommended by a man who has to travel too frequently.

On arrival we were greeted by a couple of teenage waiters who just walked passed us giggling and smirking..then after they returned 5 minutes later, they located us to our seats. Nice atmosphere but completely messed up our drinks order - 4 teas and 1 coffee isn't too difficult to remember? Our food came out almost immediately all on plates not the normal tiered stands you might expect for Afternoon Tea. The food was tasty though..and plenty of it. We ordered a bottle of wine, and had to ask for wine glasses 10 minutes after the bottle just sat there looking at us on the table - unopened. The tables weren't laid correctly..we had no knives. Overall a bit messy and unorganised - despite there being 6+ unoccupied waiters/waitresses standing by the bar watching.

We booked a 'superior' room here for a friend's wedding. Service at the front desk was ok - reasonably friendly but nothing special. We asked for an iron and ironing board and it arrived very quickly to our room. The room we were put in (I think it was number 9) was above the kitchen and so it was boiling hot in the evening and in the morning when food was being cooked, and also smelled very strongly of food odours! Also very noisy as just above the main entrance part. The room was very clean, a good size, had decent views and the bathroom was good with a great shower. The decor in the room was ok but could have been improved by the removal of the hideous pink sofa - a cerise pink sofa with green wallpaper?! We did not eat at the hotel so cannot comment on the food. The next day we went for a walk in the grounds, which are lovely near to the hotel, but stray a few steps further and one could see over flowing bins and a big fly tip of all sorts of things including un-used furniture, rubbish, obsolete equipment, etc - classy! Overall we thought that the cost of the room did not reflect the experience and we were disappointed. Under other circumstances I would have complained about the clearly 'inferior' room purchased at standard price - for an obviously poorer room a lower price should be charged. However as it was a special occasion one doesn't like to make a fuss. Must try harder Shendish Manor.

Room Tip: Avoid the one above the kitchen at all costs!

This beautiful old building is surrounded by wonderful gardens and what looks like a really nice golf course(didn't have time to play).
The rooms are large with large bathrooms(with big bath tub) and a tiny little television.
The linen was of good quality and clean and the rooms were well maintained.
I do however have a couple of beefs.
1-We made a request for an iron in our room which finally arrived after 2.5 hours and two more calls to front desk to remind them.
2-We had trouble receiving one of the tv channels which was televising sport from home. After three calls to front desk and three hours, the game had finished and they never came.
3-The elevator absolutely stunk. We used the stairs for the rest of our stay as it was just foul. Is it really that hard or expensive to clean or replace a 2 square metre piece of carpet?
4-Hot water ran out both mornings and didn't recover until 2pm. A family member had to drive home to shower.
These things shouldn't stop you from staying here but if the manager reads this I would suggest they get on top of them ASAP.
I would probably stay here again.
