“Perfect venue”
Reviewed 2 May 2014

We used the Manor of Groves hotel as the venue for our daughters wedding reception, we cannot praise it enough. The venue itself is beautifully located, grounds are stunning the hotel is first class. The staff were all very good, polite and accommodating, everything we asked for was done for us gladly and willingly. We had a lot of guests stayed over for the night and all praised it very highly the rooms were clean comfortable and well appointed, breakfast was excellent.
Would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone, thanks guys and well done.

This was a "girls night in" and was the spring into summer deal. We paid £60 per person for bed breakfast and evening meal based on two people sharing a twin room. (3 rooms booked). On arrival we found staff to be less than attentive and in fact we had to call the checking in staff to attend to our needs. Even though we know he had seen us! we were however, pleased to find that one room was ready even though we had arrived earlier than was planned. We had booked a treatment at the spa so, dumped our luggage in our room and made our way to the spa area. We were greeted by our therapists and was told that one of us would have to walk to treatment room at the golf club which was fine. On arrival to the golf club, the therapist prepared the room. The therapist was very attentive and explained the treatment (Head massage) and began. Half way through, a lot of lady golfers entered the locker rooms outside where my treatment was taking place and were EXTREMELY noisy. This somewhat spoilt my treatment not to mention when a woman actually opened the treatment room door. I think she may have been looking for the toilet! Needless to say, the therapist apologised for the disturbance despite "Treatment in progress" signs being placed outside the room. The location of this particular room is less than ideal!

After the treatment we had lunch which was not included in the price but paid for separately. This was fine and not overpriced. We had a walk around the grounds which are beautiful and then went to the pool area. The pool was nice and the Jacuzzi was lovely and warm.

We had a very nice three course evening meal which everybody was happy with. Drinks served at dinner were extra and were not overpriced. The waiting staff at dinner were very pleasant and made us feel very welcome.

Rooms were comfortable and clean and breakfast was buffet style with great choice of full English, pastries and a nice selection of fruit and yoghurt.

Over all a very nice experience and good value for money.

I bought this as a Golf Breaks trip and to be honest was very pleasantly surprised indeed. The golf course although not looking particularly challenging, certainly provided us with two of our worst ever rounds - our golf to blame not the course! It is well looked after and the golf staff are very pleasant indeed - which isn't always the case. The hotel room was fine, the beds very comfortable and the food at dinner very good indeed. The breakfast was a big surprise as being an open buffet I wasn't expecting much but the food was excellent and I ordered kippers as well which were the best I have had in a long time. There are very nice gardens at the hotel although perhaps they don't make enough of them e.g. it would be nice to have drinks served outside. However this is a really nice hotel although perhaps it does lack a little "country house atmosphere" but it is still a very nice stay. The village is about ten mins walk away and there is a very nice pub located virtually at the end of the driveway. The pool although not exactly a luxury resort type, was still very accessible with towels supplied and the gym looked spacious and well appointed.

Thank you for your review Malcolm! I'm glad you enjoyed your stay, the course is in good condition and is very well looked after by Damien and his team.
We try to look after our golfers across the hotel and it looks like this was the case for you and your group. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and I hope we can welcome you back in the future

First impressions are of a grand country hotel but dig a bit deeper and the clean white washed walls give way to a disappointing stay.
The MOG has some real plus points, well appointed gym, nice pool area and the ladies on breakfast really set you up for the day with a very personal interactive experience. Free wifi and parking are good although the signal does not seem to extend to the rooms in the basement (100's) One side of the hotel is traditional with names on the rooms and no lift to get upstairs. The other is more in keeping with a branded hotel.
The negatives are that there is no public space to relax with friends apart from the reception area which is all stainless steel, glass and tiles and not very inviting. The rooms are comfortable but dated. Spacious but very hit and miss on temperature as there is no air con and radiators are centrally controlled. My biggest complaint is regarding the water temperature. The shower/tap water fluctuates from scalding to freezing cold and is simply dangerous! This is a basic requirement which means I will not return.
Restaurant menu is limited and not very good. I would take a short walk to one of the restaurants nearby.
This hotel has great potential but at the moment falls short of the mark

good room with plenty of space. bed was very uncomfortable and could do with replacing. entrance to hotel and bar area lacks any kind of atmosphere and was not somewhere you would want to sit and chat. good food at breakfast with normal choices but evening bar meals were unimpessive. grounds lovely and area nice. qite a long way from sawbridgeworth but perhaps thats a good thing as it was quiet. the leisure facilities were great and well worth having to help unwind after a long day out.

Room Tip: we asked for a quiet room but still got one at front of hotel overlooking the car park
