“Disappointing stay!!”
Reviewed 20 February 2014

OK first things first, this is not a hotel, it's not even a B&B, its an old village pub that rents out rooms. Yes, it might be quirky & full of character, so you may expect a bit of dust or a few cobwebs, but the thin walls, creaky floorboards, squeaky uncomfortable beds & trains passing close by every 5 minutes led to a sleepless night, which ruined the stay and probably made it worse than it actually was.

After arriving, we searched for 5 minutes for a sign to the "hotel" reception, but there just isn't one, It's a small pedestal in the "bar & restaurant". Having received the key, I was then asked to pay straight away as "there won't be anyone around in the morning, so leave your key on the side & let yourself out!".

OK, now for the positives, mattress protectors (Alex Polizzi would be proud), the shower was very powerful and hot, which was a good start to the day. The tea/coffee making facilities are also good and there was a decent flat screen tv in the room.

As there was no breakfast available in the morning we drove to the Village Cafe in Abbots Langley which is only a mile away and I can highly recommend it as the service & food were very good at a reasonable price.

Would I stay here again - NO.

We stayed overnight in the main pub. This is an old pub, with low ceilings, beams and creaky floor boards. Don't expect anything slick and modern; this pub/hotel is quirky. Our beds were comfortable, sheets clean, coffee and tea facilities provided. Pub food available downstairs where there was a roaring log fire and comfortable sofas. Yes, the railway is behind, but a few seconds of rattle, once every half hour until midnight didn't bother me at all.
I know this is not objective, but we returned to the hotel about 11;30pm. Outside, the crescent moon was shining through clouds and I was reminded of 'The Highwayman' by Alfred Moyes...(if I looked towards the 'Old Inn' door and not towards the cars in the car park.)
What the hotel lacks in modernity/sophistication is made up for by very reasonable price and the possibility of a ghost, in my opinion!

Room Tip: a room in the main old building for atmosphere

Did not stay at hotel (which looked nice) but have twice dinner at the Hunters Bar & Restaurant. Cozy and warm when cold outside.Very good traditional food, wide selection of beers & ok wine list. Very friendly and prompt service. Good size portions and well cooked. Parking available but not easy to park when house full. Worth trying.

Room Tip: Did not have room, just went to restaurant,

I took all the family, 20 of us, to the Kings Lodge for my birthday treat and we had a 3 course meal which everyone agreed was excellent. We had a reduced menu of three choices plus a vegetarian option and we all pre ordered to make life easier. Staff were excellent and we had a lovely evening. Absolutely no complaints at all.

Firstly we booked 3 rooms but one of our rooms was in a separate annex from the others despite the fact that there was an empty room next to the other two rooms. We were told that it was booked – but it remained empty throughout our stay.

Regarding the cleanliness and general state of the rooms:

Room 1
• No curtain at the bathroom window which overlooked the car park
• Privacy lock on the bedroom door was missing.
Noise from railway.

Room 2
• Carpet not vacuum cleaned
• Bottom of beds frayed and dirty
• Dangerously loose electrical socket behind bed
• Broken and dirty pull-cord for the light which was difficult to reach
• Dirty skirting board behind table
• Hole in bathroom door handle as lock and latch were missing – it didn’t stay closed nor could be locked
• Hole in ceiling
• Numerous cobwebs
• Windows and ledges disgustingly filthy
• Wardrobe door broken
• Floor around skirting in bedroom extremely dirty
• Stained bathmat on rusty towel radiator
• Towels were old and frayed (no hand towels)

Corridor to Rooms 1&2
• Old dirty mattress and a vacuum cleaner in corridor – fire escape risk
• Broken door into storeroom
• All doors showing dirty scuff marks
• Basket containing used make-up, razors, hair-grips (with hair) on window sill
• On departure the ‘clean’ towels were piled-up loose directly on the floor

Room 3 (in separate annex)
Obvious stains on Towel - In this day and age, dirty stained towels are simply not acceptable in any standard of accommodation no matter how cheap
• No bath mat supplied - Clean bath mats are a necessity for safety reasons to minimise the risk of slipping when exiting the bath / shower.
• Numerous cobwebs and room decor not appropriate (James Bond picture) for a guest room. There were cobwebs in cupboards and around areas of the room. This gives the overall impression of general uncleanliness
• Excessive noise from the room next door from approx 12:45am until after 1:00 am - toilet flushing noises very loud, could hear people cleaning teeth and talking, noises were so loud it was obvious one had an electric toothbrush and one did not
• Could see light through adjoining door to another room from inside the guest room, definitely not a corridor. My sister felt very uneasy and insecure with this !!! We suspect the room was for owners / management use. If this is the case they should be more considerate of paying guests
• Shower stopped working for several minutes during use - water completely stopped. This is absolutely not acceptable

Finally – we booked ‘room only’ but no breakfast option was offered/available we had to go to a nearby Petrol station for a take-away breakfast. Laterooms.com indicates ‘breakfast to go’ is available.

When booking via Laterooms.com the normal room rate is shown as £120 per room per night. Even when 'discounted' to £50 the rooms are overpriced and fall well below the standard expected of a 3* establishment.

PS - The only redeeming feature was the very reasonable bar prices!

Room Tip: Stay at another hotel / inn

We booked this hotel as we were visiting the Harry Potter studios nearby ... What a mistake! Upon arrival, we were given the incorrect room key and sent to the wrong room ... There are only 4 rooms and it wasn't great interrupting people! The wardrobe had no handles, there were bugs in the room and they clearly don't have a Hoover as the floor was filthy in our room and in the bar! You hear trains every 5 minutes and our room was directly above the tables outside so noisy too! Very disappointing as it has potential, looks pretty outside and is in an old building. Dissapointed!

We ate at the pub and stayed around the corner in the sister building above another bar. Although the staff were pleasant enough the food and equally the rooms were not great, the pub suffers from railway noise and the rooms we stayed in suffered from the noise from the bar below!
