I didn't recognise this hotel from the bad reviews. Having stayed in many 5* places I found the Burton friendly and more than good value for the £95 per room rate we payed. The staff are extremely helpful, the evening meal was very nice and had a modern feel. The attached spa is a nice bonus, as is the free wifi. What do people want for the room rate?! I've payed double for alot worse.

We are a 3 Star family run hotel celebrating 25 years under my ownership. We can accommodate 30 guests per night and 40 plus reviews seems small over a six year period. We thank you for your comments and I hope we shall continue to welcome back guests to the Burton for many years to come.

We stayed at The Burton whilst visiting the Hay festival. Our room was a decent size with a good bathroom, plenty of storage space and a big flat screen TV with a full range of Freeview channels.

The desk receptionist was very helpful, printing out a map to help us find our way to Hay. Car parking was easy in the large park at the rear of the hotel.

Where the hotel needs to get itself organised is with breakfast. We took one look at the gloomy, poorly lit dining room and the clingflim covered offerings to decide to grab a bite elsewhere.

This hotel is a real throw back to the seventies and is in need of updating. It tries really hard to resemble a more upmarket hotel, however fails abysmally. The beds are old with sagging and lumpy mattresses, and I would question the location of the kettle which was situated on a shelf directly above the head of the bed. Aren't there rules and regulations about such things? We got back one evening, to find the towels that we had used that morning had been hung up to dry in the bathroom and not replaced; on another evening, we thought our room had been broken in to, only to discover that the maid who had cleaned it that day had forgotten to close and lock the door after her! Most of the staff lacked social skills, although there was one young Polish waiter who was really attentive. The cook at breakfast just couldn't cook eggs - even when I requested soft poached eggs I still managed to end up with two pieces of rubber on my plate. The only saving grace were the evening meals - we only ate there twice but both times the food was fine. If you're thinking of staying at this hotel - don't!

The Burton is a nice enough place - the staff were all very friendly and it's surprisingly quiet given it's on the main road. There is plenty of parking and the pool/gym looked lovely (although we didn't use them). There's a decent selection of beers and wines and the bar is dog-friendly too. The bedroom and bathroom were both spotless if a little tired. However we did find the beds too soft and saggy (so we didn't sleep very well) and the cooked breakfasts were average. Dinner was also average - there's a wide selection but I didn't think it was particularly brilliant. It filled us up but we went somewhere else for dinner the second night. Next time we are in the area we will try somewhere else first, but we certainly wouldn't refuse to stay at the Burton again.

This is the third time we have used the Burton and to be fair we would not want to stay anywhere else!
We have always found the staff very helpful, friendly and polite. The rooms are spotlessly clean with large flat screen tellevisions, tea and coffee. The en suite bathrooms are immaculate with clean large bathsheets and towels provided every day. Plenty of hot water at any time of the day or night with powerful showers. The bathrooms look to be very modern.
We have stayed in three different rooms on three different visits and have not found fault with any of them. The decor is nuetral and our sleep has been restful. There is a patio area to the rear with a small well kept garden and also a golf putting area.

The breakfasts are simple but very tasty and are enough to fill you up for the morning. White or brown toast, tea, coffee and juice are all available.
The food at the burton we have found to be superb! The sticky toffee pudding is to die for and the steaks and other menu items were very nicely cooked, plentiful and extremely tasty, even the sandwiches are awesome......Beef that melts in your mouth with fresh soft bloomer bread surrounded by a nice crispy crust.
Food can be ordered to go straight to your room and arrives very quickly with a friendly smile.

also included in the price is use of the swimming pool, sauna and steam room etc. Clean and modern facilities and very relaxing all included.......what more could you want.

Car parking is simple with a huge car park to the rear of the hotel and a small car park to the front.

In short we have always experienced a very pleasant time indeed at the Burton and cant praise the staff highly enough for their hard work and polite friendly attitude. We will deffinately be staying again. Thankyou to all of you for making our stays so enjoyable.

Room Tip: never had a bad room. ive seen someone say here that HGV's thundered past the hotel and it was n...

We arrived at the Burton Hotel on the Thursday and were able to park straight away in the little carpark outside the Leisure suite. On entering, we were made very welcome by the receptionist, who showed us upto our room, warning us on the way up of a raised step just before the top. (Needless to say, I forgot later, and fell over it!). The room itself was clean and fresh, with the en suite being very modern. Only drawback to the room I found was that there were cobwebs on the ceiling, and the slightly dated decor. Then again, we didn't spend a lot of time in the room, as we were out and about, it was just a place to lay our heads at night. The leisure facilities were excellent. At times we had the pool and jacuzzi to ourselves, staff were very helpful and pleasant. The food was good, I had the salmon, which did arrive slightly undercooked, but once this had been rectified with many apologies, I found it to be very tasty. All in all we had a lovely time there, fell in love with the hotel and the town of Kington itself, and we will be going back next October with our daughter for a few days again.

I have previously stayed at the Burton Hotel on and off for the last three years due to working in the area. And in 3 years it has gone from good, to bad, to worse :
My first experience was ok, and they couldnt do enough for you, the rooms are very basic and needs a lick of paint, updating and a change of mattress's; unless you like sleeping on a one sided sunken bed! This is exactly the same as it was in 2008!

My second experience wasnt much better and half way through i stayed at a local premier inn due to the Burton being double booked. This was ok but didnt have any facilities.

On returning to Hereford for work in September 2011 i decided to give the Burton another go, mainly because it was close to where i was working and they have a very good gym and pool located on site which is a big plus for me when working away. (this is the only upside of staying at this hotel).

Due to my work i need to book many nights in advance to cover the time scale i will be there and any extra weeks that maybe needed.
On booking the rooms as i did every year - 6 months in advance, i found that this time they were stroppy and not very cooperative. Especially when i needed to change dates or cancel them.
This year i have been:
* over charged every weekend, even though a price had been agreed prior to me staying there. When i queried it they were less than pleasent or helpful.
* i was told that i was going to be charged extra for a friend staying over one weekend, even though they new ina dvance a guest was coming to stay.
I was told that the room is per person and not per room, when i queried the OVER CHARGE over three weeks running! they said that i owed them!!.
I paid for a double room and not a single person occupancy?? not at any time was i told that i would be charged for my friend staying over. The lady was very snooty and rude towads me, even through i have been a regualr customer and never had this problem previously.
* The food is deep fried, definately not home cooked and tastelest ready meals to say the least.
* The internet wireless connection is rubbish in your room and constantly crashes, so i suggest you either enjoy the piece and quiet (unless theres a disco on downstairs until 2.30am!!) or you sit in the bar area close enough to the router, or do as i did and get a dongel.
* There are two good things about this hotel - The pool and gym area is very good and is nice to relax or do a work out if you can be bothered.
* And if your lucky enough to deal with the young dark haired girl, she is extremely helpful, runs about doing everything and anything to assist and help you, and from what i can see, runs the bar, brings food up to your room, works behind the reception and help with queries, and always has a smile on her face - She was lovely and friendly, shame the other staff didnt take a leaf out of her book.
I would only recommend this place if there was no where else and you just needed somewhere to crash, the pool and gym is great, but the hotel needs a total refurbish and the majority of staff need a personality transplant in good manners and running a successful business.
There is a co-op around the corner ( but not open on sundays) and a local petrol station around the corner.
If your looking for a good hotel try the premier inn in hereford near the race course, this has a restaurant and pool on site and probably cheaper and much more friendlier.
When i return again next year I will definately not be staying at the burton hotel.

Room Tip: Dont get the higher floors - wireless is dreadful.
