cakes, sandwiches and snacks OK but it used to be much better a few years ago. We stopped going there and now go to the Emporium in Drapers Lane.

Position is great in the town square. Now open 3 nights a week for evening meals in a superb black and white building. The food was very good as was the service but I wish they would change their menu more often

A great disappointment.
My wife had cake that was stale, small, and not at all home made (she took it home for the dogs).
I would have had a Teacake but there are strange laws in The Merchant's House where you are no allowed to have a Teacake at tea time! It is only allowed before 12 noon. This is obviuosly for the convenience of the staff - well I will make it very convenient for them as I will not be making a return visit. Come on guys what about doing someting for the customer.
Background music was a very "radio 2" and didnt really suit the setting.

It must have been a SUNDAY! We serve a traditional Sunday Roast in the Restaurant from 12 - 3 and serve coffee, tea and cake from 11am in the coffee lounge. Once the Sunday Roast is under way, which is cooked fresh on the day, it is not practical or sensible to be serving toasted teacakes from the kitchen. Any other day, 8.30am - 5pm, you may have as many toasted teacakes as you like! Serving toasted teacakes all day on a Sunday would be great, and a much easier option for the staff than serving a roast, but as we are generally booked up for the Sunday Roast, we are obviously doing something right!

We had a very enjoyable meal at the themed fish night - I had seared tuna while my husband had swordfish. Well-cooked and excellent attentive service. Thursday is usually a themed night and the restaurant is also open Friday and Saturday evening plus Sunday roast. Otherwise the tea room is available for light snacks most days.
It's a very old building and the owners have made the most of the historic features. The menu is fairly varied with an emphasis on local fresh produce from Herefordshire and neighbouring counties. There is also an opportunity to try some forgotten favourites like stuffed hearts and calves liver.
