“A rare plantsmans' garden on a grand scale”

Stockton Bury Gardens
Ranked #5 of 19 things to do in Leominster
Attraction details
Reviewed 13 July 2014

It is not often that you find a garden on this scale with so much imagination. Stockton Bury is a working farm but much has been given over to a vibrant and colourful series of garden rooms based around the old courtyard, incorporating otherwise redundant buildings
Imagine a set of individual great gardens, each leading you on to the next. There are surprises along the way with a jacuzzi Roman temple, a new garden room, a (very) secret garden and a folly grotto. But there's more, much more.
The planting is sublime with huge, colourful boarders, Island beds, trees, clematis, and views beyond. It is a fascinating garden and one of the best private gardens in England. But then there's the lunches! Imaginative lunches with fresh ingredients served from the great barn. This is a superb garden with everything you could ever wish for

I went with a group of fellow garden enthusiasts last week to these gardens and the day was made perfect by bright sunshine which showed the plants off to their full advantage. Late Spring / early Summer is certainly a good time to walk round the beautifully planted sloping garden which the present owner's uncle created. Obviously it was a work of love with well planned and interesting aspects and a wide variety of unusual plants. This is definitely a garden I will visit again, perhaps in the Autumn. The on site barn offers delicious cakes and lunches too.

Quite informal gardens but beautifully kept. They were a bit like individual rooms leading off the main lawned area. Don't miss the 'secret garden' - the lady who sold the tickets told us where to find it otherwise we'd never have known it was there.

I agree fully with the previous review and would add that it has some rare plants, an extensive ktchen garden including soft fruit, The owners are welcoming and happily advise on all manner of plants.

Stockton Bury Gardens is worth you will visiting not once but season by season. It's slightly off the main area and very rural but your efforts to visit (open Wednesday to Sunday in early season) will be rewarded. The gardens have been designed and laid out with great care and attention to detail and planting - there are some amazing settings, and round each corner a different emphasis. Look out for the wisteria, wonderful in full flower. There is also a superb tithe barn restaurant serving excellent meals (also bookable for parties and evenings we thin). The plant selection on sale has some unusual items always, and - but check this if you really want it - they sell local lamb prepared and frozen to order
