We have been to the George before and had a great meal so on Monday we booked for Tuesday night, when we arrived we found that there were no fish dishes, limited main choice and limited specials and we were very disappointed.
It was later that we found out that the pub had had a very busy weekend so had used all their food and drink, if they had told us when we booked that the menu was limited we could have gone elsewhere and returned to the George on another occasion, but because they opted for the get them in at any price option we will not be going back.

This place was highly recommended by a local, perhaps they have a different experience.

The bar staff were offhand whilst serving us a drink. Eye contact was not an option. Things improved when we said we had booked a table. We amused ourselves for half an hour reading all the "Do not" and "Not allowed" notices whilst waiting for magic time when dinner could be ordered. This does not make for a welcoming atmosphere.
We were allocated a table for our meal in a dining room with only one other table occupied. The other couple were seated under the blackboard menu. They moved tables as they felt uncomfortable with people standing over their table reading the menu.
Unbelievably they were not allowed to move (at 7pm on a Monday night!) and were directed back to the table they didn't like. When they left, there were only 3 occupied tables, none of them the table they chose to sit at. This is rather shabby treatment of what should be a valued customer.
The waitress was young, attentive and pleasant. The vegetables were plentiful and well cooked. The meat pie was awful. The carapace, sorry top crust, was dried out, hard and impossible to cut. The meat below was hard and dried out. If gravy had been present, it had flown long ago. The pie was obviously an escapee from a slow weekend! The much vaunted sausages were indistinguishable in flavour and greasy because there was too high a proportion of rusk in the mix.
We didn't stop for any more drinks or further courses. There were still only 4 tables occupied (including ours) when we left; so the poor couple mentioned earlier could have moved without upsetting anyone. I wonder why they were not allowed to sit where they wanted?
I feel this review is very harsh but I am afraid it is accurate. This could so easily be a great pub, but, it needs an attitude adjustment.
We will not return.

Good food at a reasonable price. Huge portions but you can choose a smaller portion if you wish. Good choice of beers, nice garden.

This is easily one of the best traditional pubs in the area with amazing food portions and a good selection of beers and wines. One of the few pubs that does Directors. Happy friendly staff. I'm going to make it my local.
