“Friendly efficient staff, great view of the Solent”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 June 2014

We visited for the IOW festival and stayed 3 nights. Had a nice lunch outside on the first day. Room appeared to have been recently refurbished and was very clean and comfortable. It was great to be able to wake up and look out across the Solent and then to have the same view while having the lovely cooked breakfast. Staff were very friendly, efficient and helpful. Hotel is located in a quiet upmarket village Gurnard but only took a 20 min walk along the sea front to get into West Cowes. Looking forward to returning in the future to spend more time in the immediate area and we would definitely stay at the Woodvale again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a sea view.

We visited for a quiet weekend and were delighted by the standard and cleanliness of the room overlooking the Solent. The staff could not do more for you and from check in to check out we couldn't have been made more welcome. We had lunch outside on the decking overlooking the water each day and they offered a superb range of food, try the local crab!. The breakfast was freshly cooked and served in their newly refurbished function room with lovely views across the yacht filled water.
The owner warned us that there was a function on that night with a disco but the noise was minimal and did not disturb us.
The room was spotless and it made a change to find proper tea and coffee making facilities in the room.If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle then it would be hard to find a better location. We will definitely return in the near future.

Visited this pub following a recommendation from the staff at our accommodation at nearby Gunard Pines. We were a party of 11 with a very varied age range but we ate there 3 of the 4 nights of our stay and all the meals were excellent quality and value, all served together within about 20 minutes.

Stand out dishes were the 12oz Gammon (which my son-in-law had every night) and probably the best home made, chef's recipe Steak and Ale pie I have ever had. Honestly, try it!
If that is not your thing there are plenty of other choices on the menu including local crab salad (subject to availability), a variety of burgers or light bites and baguettes.

Must be great for a sunny lunchtime too with plenty of outside seating and great views across the local beach and Solent.

And very friendly staff, we felt as if this had become our "holiday local".
Highly recommended

Room Tip: Did not stay at the hotel but following the excellent experience of the bar and restaurant I would n...

My sister and I stayed here with my elderly mother for a night. The location is perfect with views overlooking the Solent, and unrestricted parking on the road outside. You do need to check in at the bar area, but this was carried out very efficiently. There are two flights of stairs to climb as the accommodation is on the second floor and there is no lift, but my mother managed this fine.
The rooms are well furnished, clean and have obviously recently been renovated. The only negative is the hospitality tray needs to be repositioned to get the kettle near a socket. We were lucky to have a one seaview room and one room at the back. The room at the back was over the kitchen area so you could smell food in the room, but by the time we went back to the room in the evening, the kitchen had stopped serving food and the smell had disappeared. If you can, get a room at the front with the fabulous view.

We were lucky to have lovely weather and we had a pre-dinner drink outside watching the sun set over the water. We ate in the bar/restaurant in the evening and the bar and waiting staff were efficient and friendly, even though it was very busy.

Breakfast was served in the function room on the lst floor overlooking the Solent and the lady, who served us, I think it was Teresa, was very friendly and professional. The breakfast was plentiful and well cooked with lots of extra toast and tea on request. Thank you Woodvale for a lovely time. I shall definately be back with my husband

Room Tip: We had room 3 facing the water

John and his team ensured the success of our party on Saturday night. The Solent Suite was beautifully dressed with stunning views over the Solent on a setting sun. Even the balcony for smokers is on the same level, so no absent guests. The superb food was presented in a most appertising way, with very helpful staff making a seamless evening. Comments from our guests have been expressing without exception, what a pleasurable time they had. Congratulations and a big thank you to everyone at the Woodvale.

My husband and I have stayed here several times, as we have family in the area. We are always made very welcome and very effort is made to meet any special requests. Breakfast is excellent and served in a room with a fantastic view over the Solent. Meals in the restaurant are excellent too and there is the added bonus of a pool table for the boys to play on!

Room Tip: Only five rooms so book early, especially if you are planning a summer visit. All the rooms are lov...

Great lunch with our kids and dog. Very friendly staff got a bowl of water for our dog and even sell dog treats behind the bar!! Food was excellent with a fantastic view from the garden. Decent pool table in front of a big tv inside. Most importantly, decent pint of Stella! Would definitely come back again
