“Lick of paint and double glazing needed!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 October 2013

The Fountains Inn is perfectly located for visitors to the Island, but if a peaceful night's sleep in a well maintained property is what you are looking for, then look further afield.
The Inn is effectively positioned on a roundabout. The shuttle bus for the red jet service will pass by your room, through the arch under your room, exiting at the other side of the Inn, all in all a distance of 50' from your bed. This service continues to around 20 past midnight and resumes again around 6 am. Though your sleep will be disturbed by patrons of the local pubs leaving their premises until about 2.30am. Even with the windows closed, the noise is unavoidable. On another couple of negative points; the room was extremely small with no facility to store your clothing, other than a very narrow, single wardrobe, which also contained extra pillows and an ironing board. All our clothing, other than coats, had to remain in our bags. The general decor is in desperate need of a bit of tlc - a lick of paint and replacing the stained carpets would certainly be welcome. Oh and the car parking, is in a public car park up the hill at around £7 a day.
However, although the negative points outweigh the positive ones, the Fountains does have extremely comfortable beds; the staff were welcoming and efficient; the food was of a high standard; and the location is ideal for those using the Red jet service and for finding alternative restaurants.

Room Tip: It may be worth asking if there is a room at the rear of the hotel away from the revellers on the Hi...

Perfect position just off Cowes Marina The Fountain offers boutique rooms above a nice pub/restaurant. The plus's are a great location, well appointed rooms, great breakfast and a nice pub with good ales.
The minus's were generally poor showers (I was with a group of 8 and across the board the water pressure was weak across all).

I stayed at the Fountain Inn for one night in August when enjoying the Little Britain sailing competition and I have to say I was very impressed indeed. It is a pub and hotel so space was always going to be a premium but the staff allowed us (5 of us) to leave our bags there whilst we enjoyed the events and then check in when we were ready. The Hotel itself is situated within easy walking distance of the ferry terminal and right on the main street so if you want a very quiet stay then it might a little close for you but I had a room overlooking the front of the main street and slept like a baby. The pub is lovely and clean, the bar nicely atmospheric and the staff good and quick with service. The room I had (Room 1) was huge and wonderful, lovely king size bed, loads of space, settees, flat screen and all the things you would expect of an old style room, I really couldn’t fault it at all and the bathroom was absolutely stunning with a walk in shower, a full bath and everything you would expect again. Breakfast was nice but used slightly cheap ingredients with things like poor quality sausages etc but no worse than I have had elsewhere.
I really cannot fault this hotel at all and if holidaying on the Isle of Wight again I would 100% stay here.

Room Tip: Room 1 is huge and i would definitely recommend asking for it.

Lovely hotel approximately one minute's walk from the Ferry terminal. We were impressed with the place itself and the staff. The food was excellent, superb value and large portions! It is an old place and some of the reviews under this do have a point. It is on the high street so not perfectly quiet. Its an old place so creaky doors etc. But if you want a sterile modern hotel, use the travel lodge. This place has character and for the price we paid (both accommodation and for an evening meal) I really think this offers excellent value for money. The only addition I would make is in relation to the person below stating you should refuse room 15. We weren't in that room so cannot comment, but (assuming it was the same guest) we were there when he brought it to the attention of Chris (who we presume was the manager) in the dining room at breakfast. Uninterested? I'm afraid not - he was highly apologetic and went immediately to try and sort the problem in the kitchen acting in a most professional manner. My thanks to all the staff who made our stay very enjoyable

What a lovely stay again we have had at The Fountain.

We visit twice a year and have to say the rooms are comfortable, clean and all the staff are always nice.

Food is good, main courses from 5 pounds, very reliable ( see other review)

All in all a cracking gem of a hotel..

I don't know what the other rooms were like and if we hadn't have checked in so late in the evening we would have gone elsewhere. The room smelt badly of cooking food and the sash windows didn't stay up to get some air in. We asked if we could have another room but it was full.
They brought us up a fan which we put by the window and put a mug under the window to keep it open a little. There were a few flys that were hard to get rid of and in the end we left them.
The room itself , although very small was fine for decor and the bathroom was clean but all night long the fans from the kitchen below were cutting in and out keeping us awake.
We spoke to the reception on checking out but the two ladies on the desk were uninterested in our complaints.
It is a shame really as the pub itself [Old English Inn] was fine but we wouldn't stay there again.

Room Tip: Just avoid the rooms at the back near the kitchen.

The Fountain Inn is in a perfect location at the centre of Cowes. Excellent service, great value and lovely rooms. Due to its location guests should expect there to be outside noise but rooms near the bus stop are a problem which perhaps secondary double glazing could resolve. In spite of this, The Fountain should be the top place to stay BUT no one seems willing or able to adjust the door closers on room and fire doors so they bang everytime they close! Not good through the night or in the early hours of the morning. What an own goal!

Come on Chris, all it needs is a handyman or carpenter with a screwdriver to adjust all the door closers to close slow and gentle into the frame - it can be done. We own a B&B which has more than 20 doors with closers and not one of them bangs when closed so we do know what we're talking about! Our room was a little dusty too so maybe the housekeeping staff need a pep talk too.

The Fountain has great potential but needs a little more attention to detail.

Room Tip: Second floor rooms fronting the street are quietest.
