“Excellent food - Great, atmosphere”
Reviewed 7 July 2014

Having eaten at this restaurant twice now, the standout observation is the quality of the food and the ingredients, which has been excellent both times.

It is always difficult to negatively score a restaurant for service, but I have had one good and one bad experience at this restaurant. I think, the second time, there was a new-ish member of staff still being trained...it was probably just unfortunate he threw a half poured (by him) but completely paid for bottle of coke down the drain.

The reason I don't feel able to rate the restaurant as Excellent is the lake of change on the menu. It is a comment I have heard from a number of regulars and it would be nice to have some local, seasonal variance on the menu.

Atmosphere wise, the restaurant was great on a Saturday night - although, depending on where you sit you can be baked by the hot, and relatively huge compared to the size of the restaurant, pizza oven.

Having said this, I woudl certainly go again and have no problem recommending to friends and family.

“Best pizza for a long time”
Reviewed 2 July 2014

As previous reviews indicate, this is a nice rural location (easy to miss turning) with a friendly welcome, good choice menu and a variety of wonderful pizzas which you can watch cooking in the wood stove oven. Well worth a visit.

Thank you for recommending us. I am delighted that you enjoyed your pizzas. Both adults and children seem to enjoy watching their pizzas being prepared in our wood fired oven, and we are the only restaurant on the Island to offer this experience. i am delighted that you enjoyed the location and found the staff friendly and welcoming.

“Pizza Perfection”
Reviewed 28 June 2014

On the strength of the glowing reviews, we visited The Garden Restaurant during a stay nearby early one very sunny June evevening. Almost didn't find it as it is set in the grounds of a golf course/hotel under renovation but am so pleased we did. Took advantage of the sunshine and sat outside on the terrace to eat our pizzas and greek salad - a really super meal in clean, comfortable and casual surroundings. They had a decent choice of other dishes - not hugely extensive but enough variety to suggest everything is freshly prepared. Would have gone back had we been staying longer in the area. The good reputation is clearly deserved.

“Just OK... ”
Reviewed 28 June 2014 via mobile

Enjoyed our meal here and the staff were very attentive, but the food was only average.

Pizzas were nice helped by the impressive wood fired oven. However one meal promised broccoli which my daughter loves and didn't come with it. The garlic bread was very poor, over cooked and dry not really edible.

Desserts were mixed, puddings good but the cheese board was a rip off: "isle of Wight cheese" turned out to be a standard cheddar/brie/Stilton combo which I wouldn't have ordered if I'd known, and £6 for that was steep.

We would go again but will order carefully.

Thank you for posting a review. I am sorry that your meal fell short of expectations on certain points, but am grateful for your balanced review, and for taking the trouble to put in writing those areas where you felt we fell short. I have looked into the issues you raised and will answer each in turn. The sausage and mash on the children's menu does indeed come with broccoli. Our head chef recalled a request last week from one diner for the broccoli to be replaced with peas. It is possible, therefore, that your order was mixed up with another customer's order. If you had raised the issue with Evandro, or any of the waiters on duty that day they would have rectified the mistake immediately.
I regret that you found the cost of the cheese board extortionate, but this is reflected in the fact that these are locally small scale production cheeses that carry a higher price tag than other cheeses. In addition, we prefer where possible, to freshly prepare and cook everything in house, including our cheese biscuits, which our baked each day. The only other cheese kept in the kitchen is cheddar for our sandwiches and mozzarella for the pizzas and both are kept in a separate fridge. We do not use brie or stilton.
I am happy that overall you enjoyed your meal and that you found our staff attentive. We look forward to welcoming you again hopefully soon.

“the best pizza on the island”
Reviewed 24 June 2014

I am completely addicted to pizza and find it almost impossible to find it done properly as the Italians do which is why I was so thrilled to have found this gem of a place. I cannot fault the pizzas at all, they were crisp and blackened from the wood fired oven just as they should be, with just the right amount of tomato sauce and cheese. A tad pricey but definitely worth it, plus the staff were absolutely lovely too.

Thank you very much for taking the trouble to post a comment after sampling our wood fired oven pizzas. I am very pleased you found ours to be as close to perfection as it is possible to find on the Island, particularly as it would seem you have tried many ! We take great pride in providing a friendly and efficient service.
