Review of St Agnes Church

St Agnes Church
Reviewed 5 May 2014 via mobile

The only thatched church I've seen and the beauty is inside as well as out. We found this by accident and I recommend others get lost and stumble upon this gorgeous church just as we did! Well worth taking time out of the schedule.

On a bleak and bitterly cold day in February this church looks warm and welcoming with Its unusual thatched roof. Inside the simplicity of its bare stone walls, small windows grouped in twos and threes and rows of chairs instead of pews create a homely atmosphere. Your eyes are drawn up to the warm tones of the vaulted roof. The whole interior looks light and warm and has a timeless, rustic charm.

The church is only just over a hundred years old, but much of the stone used to build it came from a disused seventeenth century farmhouse. On the roof there is a little bellcote with a single bell. The land on which the church stands was donated by Lord Alfred Tennyson's eldest son, Hallam and was part of the Tennyson family's Farringford Estate. It is to be found on the road that leads from Freshwater Bay, past Dimbola Lodge, signposted to Totland and The Needles.

A booklet giving a brief history of the church and postcards are on sale just inside the entrance.
