“Fantastic Location”
Reviewed 7 September 2007

Found this hotel on the internet in January, booked and paid for a four night stay in September. Then read some of the previous reviews and began to have doubts about our choice. However we went with an open mind and had a lovely time. Our hotel suite opened up on to a sun terrace overlooking the bay. Our room was very clean and comfortable. The food was only average but acceptable, could have done with a wider choice of menu as I have a finicky husband. The staff were very pleasant and the pool and spa bath was wonderful. The outside of the hotel could do with a make over, but with the elements of the sea crashing against it, it would be difficult to maintain. We would go again !!

We read one previous review about this hotel and therefore felt some concern about our impending stay. We need not have worried it was excellent. This hotel is in a fanatastic location in a beautiful unspoilt resort. We found the staff very helpul (changed our room on arrival because we needed more space etc). Our room was very adequate and with a very comfortable bed (this is rare in even some of the best hotels), all the usual amenities and with seating plus tv etc etc. The room was kept exceptionally clean etc etc. We do have some minor criticisms eg; the quality of ingredients in the restaurant could be improved but the food was never-the-less perfectly adequate. Thank you to you all for a very enjoyable stay, we will be back.

We have stayed here before, the first time being about 3 years ago when it was first renovated. We thought we would try it again this year, as it is a great location, as we only visit for a couple of days to unwind due to stressful jobs. The first time we visited we stayed for evening meal also. This time we thought we would give the evening meal a miss, as it wasnt up to much and the staff were, three years ago, very indifferent. Well, I can say, the staff are exactly the same. The accommodation we would not fault. We decided to go all out and have the superior suite, as it was only £12 extra a night. We had the very comfortable bedroom, plus a sitting area with a seperate TV. The bathroom was enormous!!!! The bed was very comfortable, and we had a nice balcony overlooking the bay. Then we come to booking in and out. The female at the front of house was, not rude, but I would say you would not want to cross her at any time! The poor lad who was obviously training, seemed in awe of her, and did as he was told. Breakfast was a struggle also, staff standing around but no one actually seeing to our needs as it were. As my other half said, ' well, they dont get paid much do they' but that is beside the point, service staff are all important to people who are paying their hard earned cash for a break away from home and who expect a little bit of civility. But as I say, if it is a nice clean hotel you are looking for and decide to explore the island for lunch and evening meal, and there are some wonderful places to eat on the island, then this is the hotel for you. I cannot fault the rooms and there is also a swimming pool and jacuzzi at the hotel...and it looks as though they may be adding a steam room....so give it a go...just ignore the staff!!

My wife and I had a four night stay booked here, however, due to the unforseen premature birth of our daughter my wife ended up spending three of them in hospital.
I was locked out of the hotel in the early hours (despite phoning to say I would be in late).
After booking a late meal (which had only one of the three courses paid for) I was 'instructed' by a member of staff that I would have to eat this meal in my room as 'the restaurant was closed' despite there being people still eating in there.
Re-scheduled our ferry crossing (booked through the hotel) due to the above only to be told on arrival at the ferry port that we would have to pay a surcharge. This was not mentioned by the staff. When I phoned them to tell them this, they weren't interested. This left a very nasty 'taste in my mouth'.
A real shame as the interior of the hotel was excellent as was the location. Let down by bad customer service. This is not a cheap hotel and it was a real let down.

For a winter weekend by the sea this location would be hard to beat. And for bed and breakfast this hotel is really good value, but I can't believe all the reviews that say the food is OK or good; we were booked in on a deal that included dinner, but we soon chose to eat elsewhere. The food at dinner was terrible - the bad smell of cooking permeating the hotel in the early evening gives you the hint. It's a shame, because you can see into the kitchen from the car park and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the ingredients, simply that someone doesn't know how to cook or, more importantly, when to stop cooking - everything was terribly overdone. Perhaps they look at the average age of the clientele (mostly retired) and are overly worried about health risks - my 'salmon with hollandaise sauce' was a piece of salmon that had been cooked, then a dribble of hollandaise poured over, and then it had been put under the grill to cook the sauce! The result was inedible salmon with a thin string of omelette across it - quite revolting. (Our other main course was just as bad and the starters were too awful to describe)
You also have to contend with the staff, most of whom have their hearts in the right place (the wine waiter recommended a very reasonably priced wine that was very good), and they seem to have a theoretical idea of what to do - but no idea in practice, so it's all a bit hit and miss. And one of the waiters is really quite scary - Basil Fawlty, but younger. Again, I don't think this is intentional, simply lack of training. There are other small faults that earlier reviews have picked up on, but nothing serious. If the owners/managers of this hotel spent a few nights staying here they would very quickly realise what needs to be done to make this a really good hotel that would be full all year round - it wouldn't take a lot.

Location was very good.

It appears to be going through a refurbishment at the moment, which is coming along very very nicely. My personal thoughts would be that they should put together a snagging list for the bedroom's and finish it off before allowing guests into them. Still having said that they were very confortable and clean.

It had a great view on the Bay, Lots of waves crashing on the Bay, which was excepted at the end of November.

Food was really good, no problems with that at all, one of the new waiter's was particularly very funny. "in a good way".

Shame about the bar closing at 11pm and the pool table broke down on our last night, but that could happen anywhere.

Oh, one last comment, pool and jacuzzi was not in anyway hot/warm. When we asked about this, the staff informed us that it was something that they could not change. External company support etc, etc... so that was a really shame. Still i am sure that in the summer months it would be really nice.

Beautiful location in the heart of Freshwater Bay, with great views across the bay. Go for a room with a balcony.

Plus points: large, clean rooms (huge bathroom in ours), big indoor pool (could have been a degree or two cooler, in the heatwave), excellent location right on the beach.

Neutral points: food average, with a good wine list.

Minus points: staff a bit offhand (didn't offer to help carry cases, no bus timetables: "go and look on the bus stop"), restaurant service variable (dirty glasses, breakfast cereals ran out, had to ask for an ice bucket for the wine, and on the final night they said they hadn't got one!), pool security poor (unlocked door, anyone could get in; no lockers; no camera on the pool area, just a warning not to swim alone). No clock at reception and no visible management.

Most guests middle aged to elderly (before the school holidays).
