this is a very popular place, make sure that you book in advance. there is no set menu, as they write up a board each day, however on the day we went the vegetarian slection was only two mains - and one one of those was already finished - out of a total of maybe 12 or so. that said the standard is very good and the portions are huge so you really do get value for money. you might also want to check before you bring any kids aswell, as there certainly were none in the restaurant while i was there.

“Good village pub with nice food”
Reviewed 17 August 2014

Nice local with generously portions for dinner. Steak pie with really nice meat and a good plate of calves liver. Friendly service but we we had a bit of a laugh when the teenage waitress asked 'how everything was'. 'Lovely' we replied but 'could we possibly have a glass of water?'.
'Terribly sorry you will have to go up the bar and ask for one'.
Guess that's just the Isle of Wight for you, still in the 1970s but I guess that's what it makes it such fun!

“A good end to a great walk!”

We ate here for consecutive nights; both were very good and I would definitely recommend it. It has a large and varied menu and generous portions are home cooked food at its best

“Great as ever, but now with the addition of screaming kids”
Reviewed 12 August 2014

My family and I have been coming to this pub for decades and have always rated it as one of the best on the island. The main reasons being that the food is always superb, the ale and wine is great and there has always been a relaxed adult-only atmosphere. Since we can remember there have been signs on the door stating that only children 10+ are allowed inside the pub, though all children are welcomed in the garden. This was always a massive draw for us as it gave the Red Lion a wonderful atmosphere and differentiated it from every other pub which are all too often filled with screaming children.

Unfortunately this year, the pub has decided to abolish this rule and welcome in children of all ages. We came to dine at the pub on three occasions last week and each time there were children either running around the bar area or just whining at the tops of their voices while we were trying to enjoy a nice quiet meal, with no sign of the oblivious parents trying to quieten them down and teach them how to behave in an adult environment. This is a real shame as part of the 'magic' of the Red Lion for us was not having to put up with this.

Having said that, the pub is still one of our favourite places to dine, producing consistently beautifully cooked food (and a very varied selection), great ale & wine and wonderful staff as ever.
