Ryde Beach is one of the Isle of Wight's best kept secrets. You could travel the world and not find a better one. There are miles of golden sand - far too much to ever be crowded, and when the tide is out it seems like you can walk almost half-way to Portsmouth - and its only 10 minutes from the mainland by Hovercraft!

We've just spent four days in Rude with my 6 year old grand daughter. We'd planned to travel round the island but there was no need because Ryde had everything she needed: the most amazing, safe beach, free play parks, a children's fun fair ( £8.99 for an armband allowing limitless goes on most rides weekdays all day and £5.99 on Saturdays 2-5) swan pedaloes (£4.50 for a 2 seater buys you 20 minutes) a long flat promenade for walks or cycling, an ice rink and bowling alley if it rains and, should you want to explore further afield, buses and trains nearby.

I forgot to mention the best, free activity of all: crabbing! You can buy a net for under £4.00, make yourself comfortable on the harbour wall then leave them to it! If, like us, you have your own small boat - bilge keeler as the harbour dries out - you can sit on deck and leave them to catch crabs from the pontoon. Don't forget a bucket though; they'll catch loads!

Do look at the tide times before choosing when to go; the tide goes out a very long way! Plan to be there 2 hours either side of high water. Why go abroad when you can have a beautiful location here. The views of The Solent and Portsmouth at stunning!

Went on day trip to Isle of Wight to Ryde from Southsea on hovercraft - very reasonable, frequent service and my 4 year old granddaughter loved the hovercraft - she could have watched it coming in and out all day. You can book a return time, but come back earlier or later provided there is room on the vessel.
Ryde is a pretty little town, but we took the hop on/off open top bus, which stops at lots of interesting places. She loved that too.
Coming back there was a slight delay with the hovercraft, only 15 minutes and we were in an air conditioned hall, but they came round with ice lollies to apologise. Very impressed.
Tip - you can buy a combined hovercraft and car park ticket (for adjacent car park) which makes the car park cheaper - just leave time to go back to your car with it!

We loved Ryde, it provided us with a whole days worth of activities. My husband and 2 young daughters took a return trip on the Hovercraft, costing around £30.00 for them all. They loved it! We had a lovely fresh crab sandwich from the little cafe on the harbour front (by the amusement arcade). We would definetly return.
