“Great Hotel - Great Staff - Great Location!”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

We had a lovely 5 day holiday here at the Ryde Castle Hotel.

All the hotel staff we encountered we so friendly - from the lovely ladies who kept our room sparkling and clean to the receptionists and restaurant/bar staff - you all really helped to make our stay great! Special mention to the Manager, Chris who was very helpful and accommodating when we wanted to change rooms.

Next time we visit the Isle of Wight - we will choose the Ryde Castle!

It would be hard to fault the facilities in our room - a comfortable bed, two chairs, a table, tea and coffee facilities, and an up to date bathroom. But, they should win a prize for the smallest space in which to fit all these items. We stayed two nights and, on each night, we had to make sure that we found safe places for the chairs, so that we wouldn't collide with them on our inevitable (at our age - we're in our 60s) nightly trip to the bathroom and back.

Since the fire, the interior has been completely rebuilt so it is really disappointing that the bedrooms (or, at least, ours, at the back, on the second floor) are so small. Although we are both quite active and were quite fine with using the stairs, there is no lift to the second floor. There is no indication of this on the web site.

We had mixed experiences of the staff. We asked one about the history of the hotel. My wife was particulary interested having attended dances there in the 1960s! She was happy to break away from what she was doing and gave us chapter and verse from its original creation in the nineteenth century, up until its resurrection from the ashes of the fire. However, we asked another staff member whether we should hand in our (bulky) key as we were going out, a common practice in many hotels. She looked at us as if we had just landed from Mars and told us that it was our key (we did already know that) and we needed to keep it.

We didn't have an evening meal in the hotel but did have breakfast on both mornings. These were generally fine although, on one of the mornings the muesli hadn't been replenished (even though we were the first ones there) and on the other, my cooked breakfast didn't arrive as ordered and there was confusion between tea and coffee. However, these are minor complaints and we did enjoy our breakfasts!

I don't normally bother to review chains of hotels, as they are usually much of a muchness, but there can be significant differences between Old English Inns. We have stayed in four and they have ranged from the excellent to the (at best) ordinary. The Ryde Castle is not cheap, and I am not convinced that it provides value for money.

Room Tip: If you have any issues with climbing stairs, you must contact the hotel to ensure that you are alloc...

Stayed for a two night event at the hotel. I had a small incident requiring the reporting of an accident that was not dealt with correctly. The staff, hotel rooms etc. were very good. Company decisions about how many staff in the bar and who could serve should be improved. Our Gala dinner was interesting as many of the meals delivered were noi 'as advertised and pre-ordered.' The reason given the hotel has the right to 'change a menu', things may not be available for seasonal reasons, or items not received frim the supplier. Such a shame as the hotel has a prime location and appearance. It currently needs to be taken in hand. I hope it improves as I would like to return.

Room Tip: Free WiFi was not always available Rooms at the rear we heard were not as quiet as the front.

Stayed here for four nights 7-11 July. Lovely clean room with sea view. Good choice at breakfast. Found staff very pleasant and helpful. Previous negative reviews seem to be totally unfounded in my opinion as could not fault this hotel in any way and would not hesitate to return when visiting Isle of Wight again. Highly recommend.

since its re opening after the fire there have been mixed reviews to do with poor service. New manager Chris and his team seem to be getting this sorted now and apart from only one waitress on Sunday with the resulting delay we experienced good service. The staff were universally friendly, helpful and cheerful!!!
The rooms have been nicely refurbished - although I wish our two pictures hadn't both been of shipwrecks as we were in the IOW to buy a boat! Beware window restrainers limit the amount of fresh air ![elf and safety] Lovely comfy bed - good linen and towels. The heated towel rail was incredibly hot so beware. Monsoon shower head great. Front facing rooms give you a view of the sea, ours was not enormous but big enough - there were comfy chairs and some storage - not over generous. ..
The restaurant and bar meals were fine and prices reasonable.
overall yes I would go back and stay there If we return to the isle of wight. The hotel was nicely located opposite the sea front with a large car park. Look up special deals on the old English website.

Room Tip: If you can afford it there are some larger luxury rooms with seating areas - one has a very nice sle...
