“Sheela na gig”
Review of Holy Cross Church

This is amazing - there is a pagan idol called a sheela na gig which is called "The Saxon Idol" of which there are less than a dozen in the country. It is over a blocked off arch & is more likely to be Jutish since the IOW Jutes were pagans until the Saxons exterminated them. Its a bit weathered & is supposed to be a female figure playing about with herself although this one is uniquely rather androgynous. Also worth seeing is the gravestone of a smuggler with a carved picture of his death at the hands of the customs men and a story inscribed as to hpow they chases him down and boarded his boat & shot him (even though he had nothing on board (having chucked atrial of barrels overboard). There is a heart warming poem about how the family are going to get even with the excise man etc. at the bottom.
I should not be telling other people this as I don't want crowds...

Thank Irfana K
