“A Great Hotel, a throwback to an era when Quality was the by-word!”
Reviewed 19 May 2011

We stayed at the Priory Bay Hotel for 3 mid-week days in May 2011 and agreed it was just so relaxing. The delightful house was pleasing from the first sight of it coming from the car park and once inside had the feel of a comfortable and well cared for establishment. Beyond the back gardens over the trees the sea shimmers.
There are 2 restaurants, 1 is formal – called the Island restaurant - and 1 informal (doubles as the breakfast room) called the Oyster. We used the Oyster twice and the Island once, both were excellent. The staff were very efficient, helpful and attentive, eager to assist us with anything.
The Hotel has great grounds to explore including cliff walks and a 6 hole golf course, which devours balls for those who do not hit straight! We had a large attic room (actually 2 separate areas as well as the bathroom), no lift, but worth the effort as the views from our tiny balcony over the gardens/golf course and towards Southampton/English Channel were stunning. The room was very prettily decorated in pale blue and white; immaculately clean with complimentary water and coffee/tea making equipment. One minor gripe was that was no shower cubicle but there was a shower head attached to the bath tap for purpose of washing hair.
The whole island is accessible within about an hour in the car. We were glad we took our car, although buses stop close to the hotel entrance should you choose not to. Definitely will return and would recommend to anyone.

The Priory Bay Hotel has so much going for it - a fabulous building, with plenty of history and its own beach. The food is excellent and the chef catered to my special request.
The service is what lets the hotel down - just plain old communication issues and poor training meant that staff didn't quite know what others were (or weren't!) doing. So be prepared to remind staff that you've ordered a drink, and to wait for food. But if you can cope with this, the ambiance is excellent and the staff are certainly friendly and well-meaning.
We went as a large group, and found the hotel ideal for a house party ambiance. I would go back.

This review is very late but the memory of a wonderful Christmas Day is still fresh. We have stayed at the Priory Bay before and it really is an excellent Country Hotel. I was a bit worried about spending Christmas Day there but it turned into one of the best we have ever had! The staff and the owner put in an outstanding effort. The hotel looked beautiful and the welcome mulled wine was just the thing to set the tone for the rest of the day. After that, we moved to champagne and canapes followed by a slow drift to the restaurant for a five course meal. The food was wonderful, the atmosphere was marvellous and Father Christmas put in an appearance with lovely presents for everyone. The meal was outstanding and the staff were beyond reproach. We are so grateful they gave up their Christmas to give us such a wonderful one. Thank You. The atmosphere really was a relaxed country house Christmas. Games, citrus fruits and sweets were all laid out around the incredibly comfy sofa's in the lounge areas. Lit Christmas trees, decorations and a roaring log fire completed the picture. I don't care if I never cook a Christmas lunch again! We hope to return very soon.

Friendly, welcoming, professional staff. Great location, lovely seaviews, really could not fault it. The food was amazing, some of the best we have ever had, and a great wine selection too. We got this deal on a groupon offer so excellent value. If I had to say one negative thing about this hotel it would be that the decor/furniture is a little tired, but for me that actually made it even more welcoming.

You will go a long way to find a more impressive carved entrance to a hotel and inside it is all spacious drawing rooms in grand English style used for the bar, restaurants and a games room with piano.

Our room looked over the front lawns with two gig windows to sit in and stare at the pheasants and red squirrels – they have feeding boxes for the squirrels so you are guaranteed an intimate view especially from the Priory Oyster room at breakfast. If you enjoy watching the bird life kestrels patrol the ancient trees and ruins and the wood opposite is full of life in April.
The woodland walk down to the private beach is very pretty with wild flowers and the smell of wild garlic. At low tide you can easily walk to Seaview or to the Duver in the other direction. At high tide you have to take the National Trust path but this was very muddy in April.
Leave you curtains open - no one can see in unless they are on a passing liner because the dawn sun rises right into the room.
This is an effortless break and the staff were great especially the lovely man who looked after us at breakfast - he was all old world charm personified.

A friend and I took out a Living Social voucher for 2 nights at Priory Bay, where we were upgraded to one of the best rooms in the house for a magnificent weekend. I'm not sure what the other rooms are like, and I certainly couldn't have afforded this one without the voucher, but was grateful for the upgrade to a huge bed with four window seats, couches, drapes and writing desks. Gorgeous.

It's a rambling building with a shabby chic feeling that's perfect for a country house - sure the carpets aren't the cleanest but then neither are people's shoes after they've been out in the forest and on the beach. The odd stain aside, the place was absolutely clean.

The staff were really friendly and helpful; the included breakfast was a continental bar plus cooked options in a lovely breakfast room; we didn't eat there but the restaurant looked beautiful; the Victoria Room, were you can have coffee/tea/afternoon tea/relax is out of a magazine. Beautiful old furniture and paintings, it felt like an Austen novel.

The forest around the hotel is not extensive but extends right along the coast and you have direct access to the beach.

This was a rare situation where I would have been just as happy to remain in the hotel for the weekend, but of course being on the Isle of Wight, had to adventure as well.

I would recommend hiring a car to explore the isle with if staying at Priory Bay - it's location is picturesque but I think off main transport routes.

We stayed here for 2 nights in room 4 which is a stunning principal room with huge windows and a view over the sea. We were very lucky as we got this on an internet offer so in terms of value for money it was excellent! However I would happily have paid for the room at the rack rate, it was really lovely. We ate in the hotel both nights, once in the bistro and the second night in the fine dining restaurant. It was very good value for money and they are obviously working very hard to establish a good reputation. The service is staffed partly by very young people, I am not sure if they are from the local catering college. They are very sweet and try very hard under the expert guidance of the maitre d' - all in all a lovely stay and one I would definitely recommend. My only negative was that my side of the mattress was a little uncomfortable and could have done with being turned over!
