This is my tenth year visiting the Priory Bay. It is wonderful! Idyllic location and beautiful buildings. We come back every year (sometimes twice a year) to stay in the self catering cottages, chalets or clamping in the yurts.
Two fabulous restaurants that caters for all ages. Noisy families like mine with young kids eat breakfast in the oyster restaurant, but they also set up breakfast for couples who want a quieter time of it in the dining room.
Stunning lounges to sit in. The gardens are stunning.
When Richard or Danielle are in reception; matt or marta are in the bar; dan is bringing you coffee; Nigel is warmly welcoming you and offering you kippers or full English for breaky; head chef Oliver is in the kitchen; the standards and service here are first class. This extends to the rest of the team.
Above all, we return here for the excellent food, stellar location and very warm welcome. This warm, family and friendly atmosphere comes from the top. The hotel owner, Andrew is a delightful chap who is always around and takes time to speak to guests. My kids eyes light up when he brings his two gorgeous old dogs Pike and Bert to say hello.
This is a place to fall in love with...my family certainly have. We've already booked for our 2014 break here!
I've visited many places and priory bay is my favourite spot...instant relaxation the minute you arrive.
It's not unusual for the odd group to arrive by helicopter or hovercraft for lunch. This place feels exclusive but not showy...it's just fabulous! Love it! Unassuming, style and grace in abundance. You'll feel equally at home in you linen suit or shirt untucked and shorts. I've never known a place that caters so well for all ages.
If you insist on mini bar, heated pool, plush gym, mod cons etc then this might not be for you. But if you love a stunning location, gorgeous buildings, warm and friendly service (which might be slow on occasion) as well as a family atmosphere then you will be hard pushed to find anywhere better.

Room Tip: Self catering for families is perfect....older or honeymoon couples will love the character building...

We booked a table for 6 adults and 2 children for Sunday lunch today, it was truly truly disappointing, we had such high hopes because of reviews articles in local magazines but if this is the result of training under a Michelin star chef in France, then it is shocking!. The children's steak was all gristle, the fish was littered with bones in every mouthful and there was no vegetarian main course option on the menu. Either the chef was having a bad day or this is a restaurant that is being seriously hyped up with no merit to justify this. The cost for what we had was ridiculously expensive, service was good but what was served was terrible.

We are very disappointed that you did not enjoy your experience with us. I understand that sometimes when in company it is easier not to bring issues with the food or service up, but I can assure you that the Restaurant Manager would have addressed the matter and replaced your dishes had he known.

The experience you reported is quite definitively not what we are here to deliver.

Our whole team work very hard to satisfy all our customers to ensure that they have a wonderful experience and I can assure you that they all take these issues to heart.

We stayed in the 1980s new built cottages. These are tired and definitely over priced. I can forgive a tired carpet, a front door badly in need of painting, the stray brick by the front door, windows that have never been washed on the outside, but what I cannot forgive is the excuse of a bathroom barely big enough to swing a cat in and impossible to have shower in. Whilst it does have a shower there is no shower curtain! The management want to charge you £2 for a beach towel and £10 for the use of the tennis court, one would not mind were it not for the high price already charged.. Money has clearly been spent elsewhere. Another negative is that the pool isnt heated and was too cold for our children they could at least put solar heating in.
On a positive note the main hotel is very good, as are the staff and service. The food is excellent, the gardens and the private beach impressive, and I imagine the rooms in the main hotel are lovely.
Come on management sort the cottages out, heat the pool and don't overcharge for tired rooms and tennis. This could be a really lovely hotel!

Room Tip: Book in the main hotel and avoid recently built cottages

Thank you for your kind comments about the hotel and staff.

We do understand your comments about the cottages and we are currently applying for planning permission to replace them. I do hope that you were told at the time of booking that while the hotel is 3 star, the cottages are simply accredited accommodation and not rated.

For many guests the cottages offer the opportunity to stay on the Priory Estate (with or without their dogs & children) and enjoy the benefits of our food, service and facilities at a more competitive rate than the main hotel.

This hotel is amazing the building the staff and the accommodation are first class. The hotel is right on the beach and just a short walk along the beach into Seaview which is a really pretty village. The room we had was lovely and the grounds are amazing. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. The hotel is very children friendly and the staff went out of their way to make sure our stay was perfect. We will be back

Room Tip: They are all individual.

My wife & I stayed last week with our son & two grandchildren, 4 & 2 years old. Our son & the children had a family room in the main hotel whilst we thought it would be novel to do a bit of glamping in a Yurt. Great fun and well looked after by Anna & Ed. Gin & tonic on the deck overlooking the sea in the evening or an early morning stroll along the deserted beach as the sun came up, great photo opportunities.

Most nights we dined in the Priory Oyster, one night on the bar terrace, (great burger & chips). The food was excellent the service impeccable. Yes they do serve butter on stones & bread in broken bowls, it's just a bit of quirkiness. James the sommelier is very knowledgeable and has some excellent wines on his list and I can recommend the pleasant bar for a pre dinner drink & chat with James.

Breakfast is served in the Priory Oyster, no complaints here, plenty of choice and again excellent service, coffee tea & toast served promptly with requested additional toast arriving quickly.

A children's paradise, safe grounds to run around in, with a beautiful beach a short stroll away, an ideal bucket & spade holiday for young children, parents & grandparents. And when the kids have crashed out in the evening exhausted, a listening service allows you to enjoy a relaxed dinning experience, book the terrace if it's a warm evening.

The location, food, & staff made this a very memorable stay, we will return.

The hotel may have been special once but there is a real need for a massive improvement in management, service and to change the carpets. We stayed on a bed and breakfast package and the whole experience at breakfast was a fiasco. This led us not to book an evening meal there. If a hotel cannot produce breakfast then it has got real problems. I would not blame the very young staff who were lovely but clearly there needs to be direction. I would also suggest that guests paying £200 for b/b don't expect to be asked for an additonal £7 per person to play on their six hole golf course! If you mentioned that anything was wrong it was all blamed on the increase in children in the summer holidays! Absolute rubbish. I will clearly not be recommending this hotel.

Room Tip: We stayed in a standard room which was the one positive part about the experience. Could not fault...

This is a magical place to spend time as a family. Don't come if you don't have kids with you unless off season. There are a few niggles though. The staff are lovely but they could do with a bit more direction. Some of the meals took way too long to serve. Luckily my kids are fairly patient but you can't expect the under 5s to wait an hour for food and as a result some of the kids were struggling at meal times. Dinner service takes too long at night too. I got the impression a recent wedding had wiped the place out a bit. They need to get to grips with that sort of thing - running out of beer on a Thursday is a bit unnecessary. The last day we were here a drunk was complaining loudly about the lack of beer and the presence of children. He was clearly a problem yet it took 4 hours and a lot of complaints from guests (4 serious ones from this guest) to have him removed. The guy was even touching the waitresses and beginning to get physical with me. Not something you should have to deal with on holiday.

Later the same night I had to ask a group of 10 very nice but loud older kids to leave the lobby area and children's play area under my room. It was 10.30pm. Really the receptionist ought to have done that.

Food is great here but they could stick a bit less rigidly to the locally sourced rule. Some pasta and a few chillies in amongst the buckwheat and wild garlic pesto might add variety. Truly the food is good though.

I'll be coming back with the kids, I just hope the management take note of this review and provide a bit more leadership. If they do l, Thai could be the perfect hotel and well worth the price premium.
