“Lunch @ The Priory Bay”
Reviewed 28 October 2013

Went for a delightfully civilised lunch at the Priory Bay in September, imaginative menu with excellent use of produce from within the grounds. A pleasure to find somewhere that offers vegetarian food without having to ask for it and it not being the Islands favourite of tagliatelle or lasagne.

Well done Priory Bay, keep up the good work and impeccable standards.

This is a lovely hotel set in fabulous grounds on the Isle of Wight, with its' own private beach. The room sare spacious and comfortable and the staff friendly and attentive. There are an amazing number of staff, why we are not sure.
Then there is the other side of the story, the restaurant. There is a lot of hoopla on the menu about vegetables grown in the hotels gardens and food foraged by the staff, plus everything else is provided by local suppliers. All of this is true, we actually saw 3 members of the staff returning from a foraging trip, BUT nobody seems to be able too cook. Breakfast was greasy spoon standard and the evening meal was just badly cooked, overdone sole etc. We suspect that the menu was too ambitious for the people cooking on the nights we were there, So a great place to stay, but eat out!!
The other shock was the price of wine and drinks in the bar. The bottom end of the wine list starts with a bottle of Muscadet at 38 Pounds, which is ridiculous as is 15 Pounds for a large G+T.

Thank you very much for your kind comments regarding the hotel rooms and our staff as we all work very hard to ensure that all our guests have an enjoyable stay.

We were quite shocked by the prices you have given for our wine and drinks at the bar, as we have 31 wines starting from £19 a bottle. We also have a very extensive wine by the glass list, starting at £5 for a large glass of wine. As for the Gin & Tonic we have a number of different Gins. The cheapest double with mixer is priced at £6 and the most expensive at £9. Was the £15 for two Gin & Tonics?

A great weeks break in a beautiful, picturesque setting over looking priory bay. We stayed in a very family friendly yurt on the edge of the hotel grounds. We found the setting fabulous and the hotel hospitality first class. Thoroughly recomended.

we had a beautiful bedroom with huge windows and lovely views.
The staff were welcoming and very pleasant.
The restaurant has an unusual menu beautifully prepared.
Everything is locally produced, Wines are on the expensive side.
There is a nice walk down to the sea and we had lovely walks along the beach.

Room Tip: we booked a standard room and were surprised to find how big and comfortable it was. A big TV too...

My husband and I stayed here for one night recently with a business colleague as we were meeting my husband's clients and had invited them here to meet with us for dinner. The first room we were given was awful. There was a great dip in the mattress on one side of the bed - would have been impossible to have been comfortable in it. There were stains on the carpet and when I went to use the shower I was met with a load of brown water and what looked like cobwebs! Most revolting. Needless to say after complaining we were moved. This was handled really well by a lovely young French lady who worked in the bar/restaurant (wish I'd got her name as she was great). We were given a beautiful room so all was good ..... or so I had hoped!

Then came dinner! Our guests arrived and we were seated in the drawing room to peruse the menu and have pre dinner drinks. We were told that there were only 3 burgers remaining and one sea bass, no sirloin only fillet steaks! Three of our party wanted the fish so that was not a good start and two wanted the sirloin! When the waitress came back for our order we were then told the burgers had all gone and there was no lamb either! Two of us wanted the lamb! The menu isn't extensive so this proved quite difficult to find a suitable alternative. I chose the glazed beef instead. Wish I hadn't. It turned out that it was beef cheeks. This is most certainly not a cut that I'd ever choose. However, I did taste it but it wasn't very pleasant and so I had no main course. On a positive note the cheeseboard was lovely. Two of our guests had the fillet steaks. They had wanted the sirloin that came with potatoes and a selection of fresh vegetables. What was the chef thinking - their plates turned up with revolting looking, dried up chips and a bit of limp lettuce! Unbelievable.

I didn't think it could get any worse - until breakfast! I'd requested non runny poached eggs with tomatoes, my husband requested haddock with runny poached eggs! He got mine and I got his runny ones. And no tomatoes! How hard can it be? Coffee was good though which makes a nice change in a hotel. The toast was toasted too - another nice change!

I was so disappointed with this stay. The grounds that the hotel sits in are quite stunning. The private beach is a delight. But I'd never stay here again which is such a shame. My husband is disappointed too as this was in just the right location for further business meetings - they will be held elsewhere in the future!

Lovely venue, loads of character & special features in a stunning location. Our family wedding this weekend was perfect. Every single member of staff went out of their way to make every detail that was important to our daughter happen just as she wanted it. Cant praise or thank them enough.

We had a great two nights here, celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. The food was great, we tried the tasting menu one night. It was so imaginative with a variety of local food, much of it was gathered from the wild. The chef was happy to adapt it for me as I don't eat meat.
The bed was really comfortable and we had an enormous bathroom.
We had such a happy couple of days, relaxing in the hotel and by the pool, swimming in the sea and walking to local pubs for lunch. We'll definitely come again - maybe for our 30th anniversary...
