“Excellent food, great service, highly recommended”
Reviewed 13 May 2011

I have eaten at the Highdown on many occasions when visiting the Isle of Wight and I have always been impressed with the service and the quality of the food served. I have also been there when fresh seafood (including lobster) has been delivered by a local fisherman so I am surprised at the previous review that stated the lobster and prawns were frozen. Nothing is too much trouble for the chef there and they have always been happy to make any changes we request to the food ordered (for example, skinning a piece of fish for a fussy teenager). The crab and avocado salad, beer battered haddock and the lobster are amazing and if you don't fancy fish I would highly recommend the chili con carne. Very friendly staff and good atmosphere.

“is a frozen lobster a fresh dish to serve?”
Reviewed 8 May 2011

we visited the pub because of all above rates
we were deeply disappointed

it supposed to be good for its fresh local lobster dishes ( it was writen on their walls as well)
we ordered two of them
we received two plates with a half of the lobster in each, cold- almost frozen with a few prawns (I am sure that all came out from an iceland supermarket) and a small green salad on the side
each dish was costing 18 pounds
when it was the time to pay the bill I asked them why they claim that the lobster is fresh when clearly it's not?
because from me fresh means that the food was caught the same day and was just cooked and served warm
they insisted that the lobster was caught 2-3 days ago and just came out from their fridge and this is FRESH
I didnt know how to deal with that so:
As a mediteranean man who knows from good quality of food: I DONT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE
it is not a case of money
it is a case of princeples
they could say that it was bought frozen, it would have made the things easier

(the above dish was also tasteless)

“Why stay anywhere else!”
Reviewed 12 January 2011

We found the Highdown during a family holiday and returned every year over the last 15 years. The highlight of the holiday is the seafood platter, best on the island (and we have tried them all). Sue and her team provide a fantastic environment to chill, taste good food (use local suppliers) and drink at reasonable prices. If you want a relaxed stay then you can't beat this pub, it even offers cheap B&B (fantastic breakfast!). If you enjoy good food, real ale, cider, wine, good service then this is the place to come. Oh I nearly forgot, for walkers the pub is a great base as it sits at the bottom of the downs on the southern aspect of west wight and it only takes some 15-20 minutes to walk directly north to Totland bay and the solent!
