“Not as good as it used to be.”
Reviewed 23 July 2007

We have stayed at the Orchards many times over the years but have detected a gradual demise over the last few years.
The setting is lovely, quiet, peaceful and picturesque, with a 'years gone by' feel to it.
The care and attention around the site is adequate, but the grass is not mown as often as it used to be, and things are more 'tatty around the edges'. The outdoor pool did not open at the advertised times, and there was more debris in the water - it used to be cleaned religiously before opening punctually every day but not now.
The static van we stayed in was not cheap for the week, but the cleanliness was very poor. There were cobwebs in the hallway. The window interiors were dirty and all in, it needed a more substantial clean between hirings. It cost nearly £500 for 6 of us, out of the main season - not cheap.
The site showers had a problem the week we were there but the additional shower facilities weren't opened to compensate.
The onsite fishing has been stopped but nothing is said until you try and use it.
It's a shame. I hope they get things back on track soon, as it has a lot to offer. In the days of on site everything in most places, this site has a charm (and no bar or clubhouse) which is among it's most endearing qualities (ask most people who stay there).
But it does not offer value for money at the moment in our opinion.

Im sorry to hear your review. We have spent hundreds of thousands of pounds improving The Orchards over the last five years. We have widened the entrance into the park and landscaped the roadside with shrubs and flowers. We have terraced one of the camping fields and upgraded the pitches, we have tiled the outdoor pool and we have removed some of the old fencing and replaced it with hedging, using locally grown shrubs. We now have complete recycling facilities and a waste compactor and displays of the wildlife and wild flowers that you can see on the park.
David Bellamy came to visit the park in 2006 to award us with our 7th Gold Conservation Award and we also built a butterfly garden in his honour.
Over the last 5 years we have replaced approximately 7 of the holiday caravans each year at heavy financial cost. We have also added a celebration caravan with the highest specification, a canopy bed and free standing furniture and a top of the range kitchen, for those people who are celebrating a special occasion. Thes are just some of the things we have been spending money on, so you can see that we have been busy!
The grass is certainly mown now as often as it used to be. It is the same person mowing the grass and he says he mows it now just the same as he did 5yrs ago. The edges are left a little longer these days to encourage , wildlife. This is done to comply with guidelines for park owners inthe David Bellamy Conservation Award.
I am sorry that you had grievences with the indoor pool. Again I have checked with staff who have said that none of their practises have changed over the years.
If you were unhappy with the caravan then you should make this known to the person who shows you to your holiday caravan, alternatively you could report any problems to reception . All guests are encouraged to do this .
The Orchards is a five star holiday park, a member of the Best of British parks and a Practical Caravan top 100 park. We would not leave guests without showers. When we had a problem with the main shower block we had 2 other shower blocks open. I can assure you of this. It is such a shame that you did not make us aware of any difficulties you were having. Our staff are very friendly and helpful and would be only too pleased to help.

We (husband, myself and our two young children) just returned from a short break (Friday-Monday). Even though the weather didn't cooperate our stay at The Orchards was fantastic. We stayed in the 'New Discovery' caravan-very well appointed and very clean! The indoor pool was wonderful-and we appreciated the fact that they kept the number of people in the pool at any given time to a reasonable level. There were a few brave souls in the outdoor pool-from what we could see it was well maintained. There is a shop on site and a take away. The take away was good value for money with very large portions. There are also play areas for the children.
What we enjoyed most was the peace and quiet in the evenings. It was nice to be able to sleep at night without being awoken by children and/or adults acting like children!
The Orchards is located in a quiet part of the island-but there are cycle/walking trails nearby and the bus makes stops every two hours. It is a 25-30 minute drive to Sandown.
This was our second visit-and we are already planning our next visit.
If you are looking for a clean, well run caravan park that is quiet-yet very family friendly, then go to The Orchards.

We booked through the Sun offer, so got a van for £60 for 4 nights.

It is a very nice, quiet, well equipped and well run site. There is a good shop, indoor and outdoor pools and a takeaway, plus many other things. We were greeted very well by the reception staff who took us direct to the van, rather than just directing us, which was nice. She also offered to show us around the van.

The van was adequate (if we'd paid full price I may have been a little disappointed). As soon as we got in there we were greeted by a nasty doggy smell, which wasn't good as my husband is allergic to dogs. The bedroom stank of smoke for most of our stay, although the van was supposed to be no smoking. We had to sleep with the bedroom door open.

Otherwise it was very clean and the kitchen had a good range of equipment. There were 3 bedrooms, but I think if 6 people stay in the van at the same time you will end up hating each other by the end of it - only one loo and the bathroom and shower had very little storage. As it was just 2 of us we used the spare bedrooms for storing our clothes etc, as there was no room to move in the main bedroom.

The bed was very uncomfortable - a mattress as thin as a pancake and so were the pillows - take your own - you will need them, plus take plenty of cushions for the rock hard sofa.

The village does not have a pub, but you can join the social club a short walk away. We did, but, as it was only open for about 2 1/2 hors and looked pretty rough inside, we didn't bother using it.

Overall I'd rate the site as 10/10 but the van 6/10. I can't complain as we got the holidy so cheap, but looking at their regular prices, I'm surprised the vans aren't a little more spacious and comfortable.

  • Liked — The welcoming staff and good shop
  • Disliked — uncomfortable bed

We stayed at this site as part of the Sun newspaper £9.50 holiday offer in July 2005. Monday to Friday.

We upgraded the caravan for £50 and my only bad word to say about the place was although we had been warned that the caravan had previously had pets in I didn't expect to see so many dog hairs around.

The site was situated in a pretty part of the island but not too far from anything.

The facilities on the site were good both the in and outdoor pools were clean the shop well stocked and the welcome received on arriving to the park was excellent, instead of just being given a map as with most parks we were personally escorted to the caravan.

This site deserves all it's awards. I would definately recommend and re-visit. Fingers crossed for better weather next time though!!
