“Very good location to visit National Trust locations”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 September 2012

We've booked this B&B a few days before we went to the UK,so we where looking for a place in Kent with many places to visit in the surrounding area .The location was ok for me,except the road who passes in front off the house, but if you wake up at an early hour it's no problem.Mrs Susan is really a lovely person who takes care off you in every possible way,she makes you feel at home, and the breakfast can't be better.Only minor point the house needs a good entire cleaningsession, afterwards it will be a topB&B.

It was nice to meet you and Marc and thank you for your comments and glad you were pleased with your accommodation for the most part. We note your last comments but Southgate, Little Fowlers is a 300 year old rambling house and despite spending a good part of the day cleaning it is never going to be in as pristine condition as a modern purpose built hotel. Thank you both for staying with us and for taking the time to write your review.

Stayed recently for two days with my girlfriend as we were seeing a local music festival in the area.

Susan and Alan, who run the place are gentle and kind folk, made us very welcome in their country house. Very homely. No fraud issue / RMG

As it happened her daughter was also going to the festival so we felt like part of the family for a short time.

We would definitely stay again if we were in the area in future, the breakfast is splendid too!!

The fact that we have returned five times (so far) speaks for itself! Mrs Woodard is a wonderful hostess, the accommodation in both rooms is very comfortable, and nothing is too much trouble for her. The breakfasts, taken in the conservatory if weather allows, are fantastic, and apart from tasting wonderful, Mrs Woodard has the art of making everything look so beautiful too. The views from the front-facing bedrooms are glorious, and the area around Hawkhurst is full of lovely countryside just waiting to be discovered, either by car or by the many footpaths that abound in this area. I am sure we will be back again! J & G Hutton

PS Judging by the comments posted by "Anne O", there must have been some totally unusual reason for her bad experience, as we have never had any cause for complaint, and we were there only a couple of weeks ago in the middle of April, so our views are most definitely not out of date!

We chose Little Fowlers because of its AA 5 star "premium" rating and its promising website. Our room was a disgrace. The beautiful view from the window was obscured by the filthy window and the equally dirty secondary double glazing fitted over rotting, peeling window frames. There was no wardrobe, just a built in cupborad, clearly used for other storage with a rail above a fridge that was not in use. The drawers in the chest were lined with stained, rumpled paper - I couldn't possibly have considered putting anything of mine into them. A plastic mattress cover contributed to a very uneasy and poor night's sleep. The two small dogs of the household were noisy, barking loudly whenever we went downstairs. In the morning there was a pile of dog mess on the landing outside our room. I don't know why we stayed for breakfast. It was very disappointing and far from being served in the victorian conservatory was served at a small gateleg table put up overnight in the middle of the lounge. I would doubt that any of the breakfast was "organic", the toast was made from sliced bread, the bacon appeared to be cheap off cuts and the sausages of a cheap variety. Our host appeared to have no local knowledge. We will be following this up with the AA, and would certainly not return to or recommend this stomach churningly AWFUL place. Although the B&B is within easy walking distance of the village, it is outside the village along an unlit road. Very clearly standards have slipped dramatically since earlier reviews were written.

We were shocked and concerned to read your review regarding your experience here whilst we were away. We had every confidence that our usual high standards would be carried out during our absence and apologise for some things that clearly were unacceptable. At the time of booking we did mention we would be away and that we had no doubts whatsoever that our guests and pets would be well looked after since we were unaware of any problems on previous occasions when the same person had been here. It was obvious our pug and Boston terrier had not been on their daily early morning walk as instructed and not disciplined in any way and that they were allowed access into guests areas which they are not normally allowed. Your breakfast described is not what we offer – a list was left to buy our usual high quality produce. Dusting: Being a very old house we dust every day and it seems this had not been done. Again we apologise for all the above and must accept responsibility during our absence. We shall, in future always be here to personally look after our guests.

Regarding the other points you make mostly about your room we would like to add our comments here:

Cupboard – This is walk-in floor to ceiling height which we consider to be quite large with adequate hanging space even for longer stays. The items you mention stored here are purely for guests own use (as explained in the guest book in the room) – extra pillows, extra duvet and blankets and are not our own personal items. Small Fridge, for guests use is concealed in here as it would look unsightly in the bedroom.
It is switched off when not in use and the power socket is inside the cupboard which, perhaps you did not notice, to avoid a trailing flex. Use of this is usually appreciated by guests

Chest of drawers – There were lined with tissue paper with a Toile de Jour pattern. I have now replaced this with plain tissue paper in case anyone else should think as you thought.

Window – Apologies that they had not been cleaned or repainted before your stay in March. Contract window cleaners are booked from April until November, and this window is being repainted sometime in April when weather permits.

Bedding – As we were not here I did not make up the bed this time, but usually there is a mattress topper plus a cotton mattress protector.

Breakfast – Sorry it was not warm enough to sit in the conservatory. We are closed during winter and occasionally earlier or later in the season if we only have two guests, and if it is a very cold morning breakfast is taken in the guests own sitting room.

Unlit road – Although a rural area, we do have street lights from the house into the village centre. On checking with the Parish Council they are all in working order.

Finally, the person we left in charge has lived in the area for many years and we are surprised that you found him to have no local knowledge. He owned his own hotel before retiring. Feedback from previous guests has been good but, on this occasion, we totally agree that certain things you experienced were not acceptable and, we too, have been disappointed that this has happened during our absence. We would be pleased to offer you another nights accommodation free of charge to experience our personal high standards that were clearly lacking during your stay.

When we go on holidays or short trips to England, we always go back to the comfort of Susans guestrooms. The lady of the house welcomes you with open arms and makes you feel at home.....the slightest problem you have gets her full attention and she gives us all the information we need for our stay. A chat in the garden while drinking tea and eating biscuits makes the day complete...and then I haven't even mentioned the breakfast in the greenhouse......marvelous!!!

Our stay was lovely. It feels like a 5* hotel with Susan making us very comfortable and welcome. Our four poster room was comfortable and decorated beautifully with a modern en-suite bathroom with lovely smellies and creams. Breakfast was awesome. We felt like we had been away for a week after our short stay. We would highly recommend Susan and her lovely house for a stay.

My husband and I stayed at this wonderful 5 star guest house during the Easter holidays 2011, for 4 nights. Our host, Susan was attentive; making sure that our stay was comfortable, calm and quiet. The room we stayed in was beautifully decorated with a gorgeous four-poster bed. The bathroom had been recently refurbished to an excellent standard. The whole room had a homely feel, which made it very welcoming. Breakfast was served in the green room (a Victorian-style conservatory). All food was of a high standard, and nothing was too much trouble for our host Susan. I can honestly say that if we were ever to visit Kent again, we would most definitely stay at Southgate Little Fowlers. It was superb! Thank you to Susan :-)
