“Stunning all round.”
Reviewed 21 May 2011

I was feeling sentimental about a holiday I had in England 5 years ago and decided to take a walk down memory lane and google the b&b we loved the most - Church Gates in Cranbrook. I was so excited to see it is still flourishing and that David and Joe are still running one of the most hospitable and pretty b&bs in England.
When we had our first "breakfast" at Church Gates I warned my family and friends (rightly, as it happened) not to expect this service and quality of food in any of the other b&bs we had booked into during our holiday. The meal was sumptuous, the decor unforgettable, and the hosts jovial and accommodating. We couldn't have asked for more.
The bedrooms were cosy and comfortable and I loved the fact that there were lots of books to read while I was snuggled up in bed at night.
Oh, and that bathroom. I can still remember soaking in the bath after a long day sightseeing and feeling really pampered.
As travellers from "Down Under", Church Gates embodied everything that we love about England, and from the reviews, it is clearly still providing a service that is head and shoulders above the rest.
Well done Joe and David.
And, thankyou for having a great website that I could "google" and reminisce over my wonderful time in Cranbrook and, in particular, at Church Gates. (Sorry I had to put my date of stay as June 2010. The website didnt cater for "old" satisfied customers who had stayed at Church Gates more than 12 months ago, and it wouldnt let me submit my review unless I put in one of the dates listed.)
Cheers,
Meg (South Australia)

We loved Church Gates and Joe. The house is beautiful, full of charm and character. The rooms are very comfortable and furnished with everything Joe and David could think of for their guests. Joe even let us have the other room and bathroom as well! The breakfast was superb. Cranbrook is a perfect English village and set in an idyllic area for sightseeing. We would love to stay there again and highly recommend it to all travellers

We were bowled over with the warm hospitality, friendliness and generosity of the owners, Joe and David. Our bedroom with its stunning view of the churchyard was very cozy, comfortable and spacious. The en-suite bathroom was a dream for a nice soak in the tub after a long day of sight-seeing. The breakfast is a marvel in itself, substantial enough to keep us going on our sight-seeing days and Joe's famous pancakes are quite unmatched. They are blessed with living in The Garden of England where the countryside has so much to offer whatever your taste, be it stunning gardens, castles, museums, interesting shops, hiking trails etc. Joe and David's personal garden tours are a must; they have a wealth of knowledge of gardens and local tourist attractions. It is truly the best b and b you could ever wish to stay in. We are looking forward to returning to this little gem in the heart of Kent's countryside.

We stayed two days at Church Gates. Our hosts felt more like old friends letting us stay in their beautiful old home that that is loaded with charm. The ancient building sits next to an ancient church and cemetery with a small garden between the two. Atmospheric and beautiful. It was quiet and comfortable. And the breakfast was wonderful. Our host Joe made every effort to offer us a hearty, delicious vegetarian breakfast. We would do it all over again.

Churchgate B&B is a wonderful hidden gem. If you are looking for a place with lots of charm and character then look no more for a stay in Cranbrook. A beautiful 16th century building that has been clearly looked after and kept in keeping with it's age.

If you are looking for a modern hotel with no charm then this is not the place for you.

Joe and David are delightful hosts both wonderfully warm and the breakfast a delight.

We have stayed all over the world in some of the best hotels and there is something about Churchgate that makes it a highly memorable stay.

We arrived in Cranbrook on a wintry Friday, a thick carpet of snow everywhere, we found ourselves in Winter Wonderland.
Joe welcomed us with candlelight and a crackling fire in Church Gates.
It was nice ,warm and comfortable and our host was very friendly and helpful. He helped carry the luggage upstairs and showed us our beautiful room.
The room was spacious, warm and very cozy, we felt immediately home..Het big bathtub in the bathroom was more than fascinate us.
The location was perfect for us, in the centre of Cranbrook, overlooking the ancient cemetery, very quiet and peaceful.
In the morning we were welcomed with blissful harp music and lighted candles at the breakfast tablel. The table was covered with good taste and nothing was missing to.
We got a delicious English breakfast cooked with love and care by Joe. After breakfast we had a nice chat about ghosts, gardens and antiques.
We thank Joe and David for their warm welcome and our wonderful stay in their cozy bed and breakfast. We hope to return very soon to Church Gates.

We still remember every lovely minute there...after a full year. Cranbrook is a charming village located near some of the lovliest public access gardens and most significant historic sites in England. Between short drives to
Sissinghurst, Pashley Manor, Great Dixter, Scotney Castle, Hastings, Tunbridge, and Cantebury, the village itself
offers a Windmill and historic Museum staffed by wonderful doscents.

Church Gates is the definition of charm. It was built before Shakespeare was born and is modernized just enough to be comfortable. Hosts Joe and David are knowledgable, generous, and great fun. The delftware breakfast is a wonder to behold and easily the best we've ever seen at a B&B. Step out the door into the yard of a 12th century
stone cathedral and peruse the very, very old cemetary. A step further and there a shops, lively pubs, and restaurants, and peacefull walks through the Weald.
