“The Perfect English Country Village, The Perfect Bed and Breakfast”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 October 2010

We still remember every lovely minute there...after a full year. Cranbrook is a charming village located near some of the lovliest public access gardens and most significant historic sites in England. Between short drives to
Sissinghurst, Pashley Manor, Great Dixter, Scotney Castle, Hastings, Tunbridge, and Cantebury, the village itself
offers a Windmill and historic Museum staffed by wonderful doscents.

Church Gates is the definition of charm. It was built before Shakespeare was born and is modernized just enough to be comfortable. Hosts Joe and David are knowledgable, generous, and great fun. The delftware breakfast is a wonder to behold and easily the best we've ever seen at a B&B. Step out the door into the yard of a 12th century
stone cathedral and peruse the very, very old cemetary. A step further and there a shops, lively pubs, and restaurants, and peacefull walks through the Weald.

I travel a lot and this is, by some distance, the best B&B we have stopped in. The generosity of the hospitality was wonderful and the quality of the food superb. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom a great indulgence. David and Joe are wonderful hosts.

I was stunned on reading the one & only negative review of Church Gates B&B. My friend and I have stayed with Joe & Dave five times in as many years and have only found them to be warm and delightful people and their accomodations perfect for anyone who appreciates what they offer - which is: charm, historic character, unequaled hospitality, gourmet breakfasts and knowledgeable advice on nearby attractions. On top of that they are located smack dab in the middle of the garden district If you really like sterile and impersonal - then go for the big chain hotels. Church Gates is the polar opposite. I'll take Church Gate every time.

We have stayed with Joe and David 4 times and love every minute we are there. We've grown to love those guys and all their neighbors and friends, who stop by and chat all the time. Some of their friends have invited us to their homes for cocktails and cookouts, it is the friendliest town I've ever seen. We can take a walk on the streets of this little town and pass restaurants, thrift stores, many other shops, several banks, the post office and a pharmacy- all within 5 minutes. Joe and David are wonderful hosts and we love them dearly. Stay there and enjoy them and the sweetest little town in the world.

Are we talking about the same place?! I have never stayed in such a filthy hovel purporting to be a guest house. One room was so disgusting that one of our party booked into nearby George Hotel-which WAS superb. My "quaint" room had rubbish piled above it. The place is a potential death trap if ever there were a fire. Does Kent Tourist Dept. inspect for health & safety? They should close this place down. Appalling!

We are obviously mortified that this lady can hold these views about our Bed and Breakfast. Church Gates is a clean, attractive and safe establishment - read all our other TA reviews to find out. Look at the numerous clear photographs on our web site.

Church Gates has been inspected and approved by the Environmental Health Department of Tunbridge Wells Borough Council and the Cranbrook Association of Bed and Breakfasts. Naturally we take hygiene and fire safety issues extremely seriously. We are always happy to respond to genuine concerns from our guests and we do our best to resolve any problems as soon as they are brought to our attention. We want happy guests sharing our home.

We do accept that our accommodation, which dates back to the 16th Century and is a Listed Building may not to everyone’s taste. It is not a five star hotel, neither is it a soulless chain. But it is clean and safe. Whilst we appreciated at the time that this lady had certain 'issues' we do find it strange that, in the light of her allegations, she chose to stay at all. Not just for one night, but actually two, in our supposedly filthy cowshed. If she had voiced her concerns (and she is obviously articulate) we would have been happy to find her more suitable accommodation.

Surprisingly, she and her two fellow travellers also enjoyed breakfasts together in our alleged 'hovel'. They made no complaint about the alleged 'filth' All three paid in full with no complaint. She did not even write a letter of complaint after she had left.

If people do not voice their complaints, how can we respond? Unsurprisingly she mentions nothing of her complaints to us at the time and our response in her review. (Actually to be fair, we most unexpectedly received two stars for service!)

To sum up, I am sure most people, especially a 'seasoned traveller' would run a mile from the type of establishment which is described in the review which was, by the way, submitted some three months after her stay. Perhaps the passage of time has further distorted her perception of an event she did not fully enjoy. Astonishingly this 'seasoned traveller' according to her own graphic allegations pupports to have eaten, slept and bathed in a dirty pigsty for two nights, and whats more she didn't complain and she paid her bill in full.

I would be happy to provide a fuller response to both 'seasoned traveller' and past and prospective guests if there are any other aspects of the review which you would like me to cover.

Well, we've just got back home from a wondeful short break to the garden of england - Kent. We chose Church Gates B&B from the website - Purple Roofs - the reviews were completely accurate as were the photos - such a charming little place. The B&B was full of love and character. Our hosts, Joe and David (and Tilly) were such lovely, warm and interesting people - they made us feel extremely welcome. I've just been on the scales and found i've put on half a stone! Thanx Joe - lovely breakfast - everything you desire and fills up you up for the day. We visited several castles - the best for us was Dover, then Leeds and then Bodiam. We wish you all the very best Joe and David and look forward to visiting you again soon.

My partner and I have just spend the most amazing 8 days and nights at Church Gates, Cranbrook. Having not booked in advance, we regard us as really lucky people to come to Church Gates by wonderful chance. We couldn't have had better hosts than Joe and David and no greater place to stay. The minute we passed the doorstep of Church Gates we felt at home. The house is simply lovely and Joe and Dave are really caring hosts. The breakfast, prepared by Joe, is wonderful. Every morning Joe gave us great tipps how to spend the day, what to see, where to eat. There are so many lovely gardens, houses and castles to visit in Kent. We have seen at lot and there is still much more to see. Also we met neighbours and other guests and had great and pleasant talks with them and our hosts. To stay at Church Gates is a real treat. Leaving Cranbrook seemed a bit like leaving family, which is amazing after just 8 days. We definitely will stay in touch with Joe and Dave and visit Church Gates again as soon as possible.
