“Magical hideaway”
Reviewed 2 weeks ago for a stay in July 2018

We’ve been coming to Benson’s Rest for years ever since Nick and Sarah opened their doors to guests. Each stay has been filled with lovely memories thanks to the great hospitality of our fabulous hosts.

Their teenage children are endlessly kind and patient with our two small children, bringing them hamsters to play with, allowing them to explore the beautiful grounds with their gorgeous labradors - it is truly an idyll for city children.

The location of the property is excellent, beaches, outlet mall shopping, steam trains, vineyards, alpaca farms, reindeer centre... all within driving distance.

We are looking forward to many years of repeat visits to this most lovely of holiday homes.

Just been to Bensons Rest for an extended stay - our third visit. We love it. Perfect location, a real experience of the beautiful Kent countryside with the best hosts you could wish to meet. We would highly recommend this accommodation, surroundings, and the added bonus of such delightful owners, all of which exceed expectations. Thank you so much for a wonderful few weeks!

“Beautiful Benson's Rest!”

If you want to experience the real englisch country side then go to Kent.
Stay with Sarah and Nick in Benson's Crest and you feel the beauty of the country and friendly people of Cranbrook. When we arrived at Benson's Crest there was a warm welcome from Sarah and Nick. ( thank you for the outstanding pie!). The house is clean, big enough for four people and the beds are very very good! Go eat in the Peacock, visit Sissinghurst, take a high tea within the George Hotel and make a walk in the woods. We have had the most English weekend of our live and better weather than in the Netherlands. We come back, that is for sure!!!

“A Disappointing Seven days”

Positives:

• Good central position, which is a great for exploring the whole of Kent.
• Reasonable price for a four-bed property.
• Helpful owners.

Negatives:

Nuisances. We spent the first hour of our stay vacuuming up spiders and their webs, which were in every room. There was also a wasps' nest above the bathroom, which the owners dealt with when we told them about it. The drainpipe from the sink waste was also broken and leaking externally (again, the owners did not seem to be aware of this).

There is only one means of egress, via the back door, which is beyond the kitchen when you are using the living space. (There were two other doors that led to the hall and garage but these were both locked during our stay.) I don't know how you would be able to get out of the property if there was a fire in the kitchen.

Restricted privacy. As the owners' information states, this is a semi-detached bungalow, which has a boundary fence at the rear. However, this isn’t the case at the front of the building; consequently, there is a lot of footfall outside the windows of the accommodation and numerous vehicles pulled up outside our lounge/diner during our holiday. This impinged upon our privacy and wasn't conducive to the seclusion that we were hoping for.

Our biggest concern was bedroom two, which is recessed within the family's living accommodation (one wall has the hall and staircase on the other side of it and there are living/bed rooms above its ceiling). This proximity resulted in a great deal of disturbance during our stay, e.g. friends/neighbours knocking on the front door, being greeted and led in; audible 'discussions' between the owners; family and friends ascending and descending the staircase could all clearly be heard and regularly disturbed the peace and quiet we were hoping for. Perhaps the biggest commotion we heard was a sleepover that the owners' children held during the last night of our stay. This involved at least half a dozen teenagers being dropped off at the door (see above) and behaving as you would expect half a dozen adolescents to behave, i.e. neither quietly nor considerately, well into the small hours. This incident, above all of the other issues, left us spending our last night out in Kent feeling anxious, stressed and dreading the return to Benson’s Rest.

I'm so sorry that it looks like you didn’t enjoy your stay with us but I’d like to thank you for your review which I think will be helpful for others on TripAdvisor.

I'm grateful you alerted us to the wasps nest and outside leaking sink waste water pipe so that we could deal with it swiftly – the pipe was dealt with the same day you pointed this out and the Wasp man was probably one of the visitors who unfortunately disturbed you a few days later.

In the Kent countryside there are a lot of spiders, particularly in late summer. I’m sorry that these small creatures created such alarm; when you pointed out their presence we carefully captured them and released them back into the wild straight away.

As you say we’ve been clear about the location of Benson’s Rest in our description and it’s pricing reflects this; it is an annexe attached to our family home which means we can offer it at a very reasonable price for a two bedroom property - thank you for recognizing this.

To others reading this review, it’s accurate. If you are looking for monastic solitude in a sterile environment, Benson’s Rest is not for you. If however, you’re looking for a reasonably priced holiday home that sleeps four in a good central location that is ideal for exploring the whole of Kent, with helpful owners and recognize that there are a number of other animal species that inhabit our great and glorious world, then this might just be right for you.

Stayed for a week and really enjoyed the welcome. Well presented, clean and tidy. Lots of information on what is available in the area and our National Trust membership was well used. We can certainly recommend Bensons Rest.
