“Nice place but a little rough round the edges.”
Reviewed 12 August 2010

This is one of those places you just know won't have any hot water for your shower on a Sunday morning...

The location is very central and there is a pay carpark close round the corner. Checking in was nice and easy, friendly staff throughout showing us to our room. A little quirky through the restaurant to one of the back rooms. Ours was relatively pleasant, no view to talk about - looking out onto a building and various plumbing (although I was promised a sea view when I booked). Room was fine though with TV and relatively spacious. No AC or minibar. HORRIBLE pillows. The bathroom was a little tatty but clean and the bar and restaurant nice enough. Manuel from Basil's gaff was running the breakfast service, what a character! All in all an OK place to stay, not great but then probably one of the better places in the area. Not great though.

And as for the hot water? as expected the shower was running cold on the Sunday morning.

I stayed at Dunkerleys on business and found the room quite nice, very spacious. However, the room was above where the kitchen was and all I heard when I went to sleep was constant banging until the early hours. You couldn't open the window because of the noise and as a result the room was too warm. The tv is nice, but the channels constantly flicker especially on itv and channel 4 making it unwatchable. The shower was very weak and no mat to put in the bath which isn't very good for safety as I kept slipping everywhere. The sink in the bathroom has a shelf just above it so it is hard to even have a wash without injuring yourself. I went to the bar for food on the first night and that was nice but found better places nearby. The breakfast was nice, although I only ate it 2 out of 4 days because the first day it took 20 minutes for my coffee to come, with the waitress walking round in what appeared to be slow motion. The second time I had breakfast it was very nice and served quickly.
I won't stay there again and if you choose this hotel, then take some ear plugs and don't rely on watching a flickering tv.

My wife and I stayed at Dunkerleys for our wedding anniversary in mid April. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome by the reception staff and checking in was a very simple process. Having checked in we dumped our belongings and went to the bar where we were greeted by very friendly bar staff and a man singing and playing a piano, its great to have live music on a Saturday afternoon. There was a massive selection of wines to choose from ranging from £10 per bottle to £150 per bottle, all available by the glass as was the champaigne. In the evening we decided to dine in the restaurant where I can honestly say that I have never had such well cooked food. We ate from the set menu costing just £20 or so. The food and service was first class throughout, we were amazed that food and service of this quality could be offered at this price. I can honestly say as a regular traveller both in the uk and abroad that I have never seen rooms so clean and beds so comfortable. In the morning we were treated to a fabulous full english breakfast, again with friendly, informative and helpfull staff. I would suggest this may be one of the best value restaurants and places to stay in the south of England.

We stayed at this hotel for a weekend break. From checking in to checking out, we were made to feel at home. The rooms are both well appointed and very comfortable, with many having sea views.
In the restaurant we were treated to a new dining experience. For dinner, a six course gourmet meal, your taste buds will certainly be in for a treat. And breakfast, if you can manage it! will not disappoint either, with the 'full english' being highly recommended.
Mr Ian Dunkerley your genial host will make you feel special during your stay, and if he is doing the cooking, you wont leave the restaurant disappointed!
We took the Dinner Bed and Breakfast weekend package, a very reasonable tariff !

We spent one night at Dunkerley's and had a very pleasant and enjoyable stay. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly and could not do enough for us. We booked a superior room via the website which was quick and painless. The room itself (Room 9, The Crow's Nest) was a good size and very clean with all the usual mod cons (large flat screen, kettle, trouser press etc etc). My only gripe was that the curtains were rather thin meaning that on a night the room was a tad bright, plus we did get a bit of noise from the main road and a few revellers on their way home from the nearby pub on Saturday night. We did not eat dinner in the restaurant but had a cream tea in the bar lounge which was very good. Breakfast in the morning was superb with a great selection of hold and cold food. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone.

This hotel is family run and you can tell. We could not fault the staff who were always friendly and attentive. We came on reccommendation and the dinner was everything we expected. There was a good choice of wine not overpriced. The scallops were to die for! I followed with wild seabass on red pepper fondue and we both enjoyed for dessert the coconut pannacotta with black pepper, caramel and white chocolate ice cream. It was pure indulgence and a great place to return and we certainly will.
