“Good value, warm welcome, will visit again”
Reviewed 19 June 2014

This has always been a nice pub in a pretty Kentish village. It's still a local and all the better for that. Menu is simple and straightforward. An old London restaurateur once told me to be suspicious of too much choice on a menu. The H&H menu offers a limited number of starters and mains. Food was good and reasonably priced. Nice atmosphere and excellent service without being intrusive. We will return

“what has happened???”

All I can say is Wow what 6 months can do to a place.

last visited this lovely little country pub on the off chance as we were sent through the back roads due to a diversion in deal. We had a gorgeous meal in a lovely clean and friendly setting.

we returned last week and was met with very grumpy staff and a very unclean establishment.

the staff were lazing around the bar complaining about other staff members and their work schedules which infront of customers I thought was not the best time or place for such a chat to take place.

Our meal when we FINALLY received it was nothing like we were expecting. We ordered the h&h burger expecting the same meal as we ordered 6 months previous, last visit the burger met a definate WOW factor for the pub, arriving on a lovely roll with fresh salad a nice juicy burger proper chips in really nice chip buckets and fresh coleslaw in a little pot with freshly made onion rings, the height to this burger was just WOW WOW WOW!!!!
This visit... the roll was a bog standard sesame bun, wilting salad which looked like it was yesterdays, the onion rings looked like they had been cooked 3 times, the chips were frozen ones. Gone are the days of the chip bucket and the pot with coleslaw, everything looked like it had just been literally thrown on a plate with absolutely no care or attention to detail.
The worst part, we waited over an hour for this meal and there was only 2 other tables of people eating, do not understand the wait as our previous visit the pub was alot busier and the food was out in record time.

I dont understand how the pub can go so down hill in just 6 months between our visits.

All I can say on a good note was that the waitress was very polite and friendly and was very apologetic about the wait. Seemed like she was used to doing this to customers often

Thank you for writing a review for The Hare and Hounds in Northbourne, we are please that you find our pub to be a lovely country establishment. The pub has been open since 1621 and as such is one of the oldest pubs in the area. We were sorry to read that on this occasion you were concerned about standards of our food dropping.
Our onion rings are always freshly cooked to order and NEVER reheated, as are our homemade Burgers. Salad is fresh every day and I can only think that the heat from the Burger contributed towards the lettuce appearing limp.
We however we are a little confused about the sesame seed bun, as this is something we have never served in the last two years. Buns are usually multi seeded and fresh. The ciabatta was taken off the menu some time ago as customers found it too dense. Coleslaw is always served in pots and chip buckets were taken away, but we have been trying to serve the chips in different ways to see what customers prefer. Upon reading your review we are considering bringing back the buckets!
Our staff are usually extremely friendly and helpful and we have never had complaints about grumpiness, and we apologise if you had a different experience. We as owners are always conducting customer service training with all our staff to ensure consistency.
We look forward to seeing you again when we hope you will experience the Wow Factor of The Hare and Hounds burgers which we are famous for, in the beautiful surroundings of our lovely rural village pub in Northbourne.

“Disappointing”
Reviewed 12 April 2014

A very disappointing evening. Went to the Hare and Hounds after hearing good things but . . . We waited 30minutes for starters, pate and garlic mushrooms. The pate was a very small portion and the mushrooms served on soggy ciabatta. A further 20minutes brought the main course, steak and kidney pie with no kidney and swimming in not very tasty gravy, I has to search for the 5 small pieces of chicken in the thick solid suet pudding. The dauphiose potatoes were soggy and appeared to have been hanging around in the kitchen for a while. Sorry, friendly staff and good beer don't make up for poor food. We will not be returning.

“Great Lunch”
Reviewed 30 March 2014

Visited with family on Mothers Day. Food was of an excellent standard and the staff were friendly, helpful and accommodating. Nice atmosphere topped off with the added bonus of complimentary flowers & biscuits for the ladies and a round of Vodka shots on the house.
Great location and would definitely recommend and return in the future.

“Tasty enough, but a little slow”
Reviewed 10 March 2014

We went for Sunday lunch, and the roast meats were delicious, the veg were average, and the puddings were brilliant!

The service was a little slow, but there were only two people serving and I think they had been caught out by sudden good weather, and being in a lovely rural location walkers had dropped in for a drink.

The children's play area was good, but not visible from inside and access was via a road.

Would definitely not rule out going again.
