Owner description: Built by the order of King Henry VIII it is one of the finest Tudor artillery castles in England, and among the earliest and most elaborate of a chain of coastal forts, which also includes Calshot, Camber, Walmer and Pendennis Castles. Today you can explore the whole of the castle, from the storerooms to the first-floor captain’s residence. Take a walk around the defences and admire the squat, rounded bastions and cannons.

Having walked around numerous castles and been left cold, I wasn't expecting much - but Deal Castle was surprisingly interesting and has some interesting features that are worth a look at.

Adult entry was £5.50 and the hard sell to join English Heritage was a little irritating on arrival, but the entry cost seemed reasonable. Some of the displays inside the castle seem pretty disparate and incoherent, but the included audio tour is a good complement to a walk around the site.

After visiting Walmer, which has been converted into a private residence, this fort is even more interesting as it is the bare bones as it would have been when in use. Other visitors seem disappointed with this but we found it very interesting as you can see all the building techniques used and the different materials used. In the bowels of the castle you can walk all the way round through a narrow, dark passageway. Again the self guided tour excelled. Friendly, helpful staff. Beware the narrow entrance to the car park - it took us a couple of turns round the block before we were actually sure that's where the entrance was!!! A very interesting visit. Pity about the location - not as photogenic as Walmer.

We had been to Walmer Castle and I suppose we expected the same sort of thing here, but we were very disappointed. It really is only the shell of the castle, lots of nooks and cranny story check out.We went down into the cellars and took a left turn and went along narrow tunnels some very dark in places, there is no way out until you've done a whole circuit of the building! it is interesting but not as much as Walmer.

We added another fort to our collection. It is interesting to see all the forts around the English coast as well as the opposing ones in Belgium and also 1 in Menorca. We found the audio tour interesting in parts although I do not like the re-enactments and would welcome a fast forward to the historical information. The walk around the underground parts are very interesting.
