Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Built by the order of King Henry VIII it is one of the finest Tudor artillery castles in England, and among the earliest and most elaborate of a chain of coastal forts, which also includes Calshot, Camber, Walmer and Pendennis Castles. Today you can explore the whole of the castle, from the storerooms to the first-floor captain’s residence. Take a walk around the defences and admire the squat, rounded bastions and cannons.

“visit to Deal Castle”
Reviewed 2 June 2014

Visited this castle, maintained and run by English Heritage. It is a coastal fort in very good condition. Access for people with mobility problems is limited. Superb views of the English Channel. Parking is free and access to the beach is easy. Audio guides are avaliable.

“A fascinating place and a must visit”
Reviewed 1 June 2014

This is a gem of history that no one coming to Deal should miss if you can get to it. Right in the middle of Deal on the waterfront. Built by order of HENRY VIII, a piece of wonderful Tudor history.

“A Castle as it should be !!”
Reviewed 29 May 2014

A wonderfully untouched castle that hasn't suffered "Disneyfication". As you walk round the many passageways and through brick-lined rooms it's as if the troops left only a few days earlier !! . . .there wonderful character of a true Tudor castle is still there to be appreciated. As you enter through the huge oak doors you're greet be friendly and knowledgeable English Heritage staff who give all sorts of info about the things you're about to see !! . . . .this castle is a "must" to visit !!

“Surprisingly interesting!”
Reviewed 26 May 2014

Having walked around numerous castles and been left cold, I wasn't expecting much - but Deal Castle was surprisingly interesting and has some interesting features that are worth a look at.

Adult entry was £5.50 and the hard sell to join English Heritage was a little irritating on arrival, but the entry cost seemed reasonable. Some of the displays inside the castle seem pretty disparate and incoherent, but the included audio tour is a good complement to a walk around the site.
