I had become resigned to enduring a barren, coffee- and paperless train journey to work from Deal station and relying on the hit-and-miss refreshments trolley.
Imagine my delight, then, when this little gem appeared and I think it is time it got a long overdue mention. For a caffeine and newspaper addict like me, discovering the Platform 1 coffee shop was like finding an oasis in the desert.
Platform 1. Well named, as it adjoins the platform of the same name at Deal station, discreetly advertised by a neat sign at the door.
It's branded in retro-style - old Southern Railway livery, I'm told. It's unpretentious and manned by friendly staff. Apart form hot beverages and papers it was selling cold drinks and chocolate bars too, and I noticed that hot cereals are on offer too.
At a time when independent shops are disappearing from Deal town centre, it's great to see Platform 1 bucking the trend . Thanks, guys, for this much-needed amenity.
