Have known this cafe as The Caterer for many [many] years, and recently the cafe has been refurbished and rebranded..... it's been well overdue, and the refurb has been very, very well done. The fish and chips are superb, whether as a take-away or "sit down". The staff are welcoming, and it's been in the family for many years and a lot of the staff have been with the Caterer for years too..... says a lot!!!

The Middle Street Fish and Chip shop is still the best BUT has quite restrictive opening hours, and The Sea View is open most days!! So try The Sea View - worth a visit !!!!

Remember those quaint old seaside cafés which served proper, fresh fish and chips with a pot of tea? The ones with those red squeezie tomato-shaped ketchup bottles on each wooden table and a blackboard above the till telling you about the ‘daily specials’? Well, strangely the charmingly old-fashioned town of Deal was lacking in such a place – unless you were prepared to compromise with one of the few slightly run-down venues or run the risk of turning-up at Middle Street Fish and Chips (who may have decided to close-up early for the day) or go for the ‘same-old’ pub-grub instead.

BUT! Now, there is the wonderfully re-furbished ‘Seaview Fish Restaurant and Takeaway’ (formally ‘The Caterer’). Situated right opposite the beach and Deal’s nostalgic pier; this definitely is THE place to stop for that British institution of fish and chips – rain or shine. I made a mental note too of the large room at the back for parties. Mmmmm.. ;)

I had the haddock and hubby opted for the cod – both wonderfully fresh and cooked to perfection! Nice portion sizes that were classically presented with a little salad. I don’t think I’d had fresher fish and chips than this for many years. No sign of any frozen food or soggy batter here! Even the chips are proper - home-made from local potatoes. A side of fresh onion rings and the mandatory mushy peas was just the thing. We even decided to swap the obligatory cuppa for a bottle of house red (at £8.50, who can resist?). This was a real treat. We didn’t care that the freezing North wind was howling outside, from the panoramic Seaview windows we watched the waves crashing against the shingle. Forget that horrible shopping-mall experience - this is what genuine seaside weekends-away are all about! But what makes this place special is that it is a family-owned business. I learnt that some of the staff are family members and others had worked for the family for over twenty years. The boss must be doing something right. His philosophy is simple: locally- sourced, fresh fish and chips; simply presented at a good price. No compromises. I have to admit as a ‘foodie’ it’s my kind of ethos and even better - his vision is so evident as soon as you walk in: clean (no lingering cooking-oil smells here), tidy, happy staff and great food -all in a location that’s hard to beat. Whether it’s a sit-down meal or a takeaway for the benches on the promenade - who could ask for more?

We watched with interest as the owners invested heavily into a refurbishment of this family owned seaside cafe and it has transformed the top of King St Deal. We have tried several other fish and chip shops in the area in the last 2 years - So we couldn't wait to try it out as a dinner venue first before using it as a take away as the house wine was advertised which was exceedingly palatable for only £8.50. Upon entry were welcomed and informed the locally sourced fresh fish had come that day from Hythe and they will never ever serve frozen fish at this establishment. The chips are hand cooked fresh on site to order and are not bought in frozen. This in itself makes a real difference and sets this place well apart from many others. All the oils are cleaned and filtered after each service so you don't have that pervasive smell which gets into everything including your clothes. the Staff are passionate about what they do which is lovely to see. As for the food I had Cod and my partner had Haddock at it was quite simply stunning- We have enjoyed fish and chips at the world famous "Magpie Cafe" in Whitby and this place should become one of Rick steins new food heroes. It is just the best! best fish, best batter best chips, Lovely setting, nice decor, forget sitting on the seafront - keep warm have a glass of wine or beer and enjoy your meal with a knife and fork- this is the way to have your fish and chips by the seaside- so as the Londoners asked us the other day where can we get the best fish and chips in Deal now you know!!!
