“No marshalling and a very slow round”

Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club

Deal golf course, as it is known to many golfers, is one the best and most interesting links courses in the country. It is relatively expensive to play there as a visitor unless you are playing with a member. £130 green fee. Why, oh, why then do they supply really cheap looking score cards and why, can they not marshall the course properly to avoid unacceptably slow play. Last week when I played it took almost five hours to finish, which says there is no marshalling and/or they allow golfers who have high handicaps to play. Either way this leads to a disappointing time. When I went to the pro shop to comment on this slow round they had closed and gone home!

Many golfers look at the rankings or pick the courses they have seen on television when they want a top-level golfing experience. Soon, after this year's British Amateur which I understand may be televised, this group of courses may also include Deal.
This is wholly deserving, but also a pity because my group's experience was that of discovering a real hidden gem.
So, if you enjoy traditional links golf at the highest level and a club-house that oozes tradition afterwards/before, this is definitely for you. The staff are really friendly, especially the pro.
(However, the web-site does not advertise that you should bring a jacket&tie as a visitor, but if you do, you can probably use all parts of the club-house to the full.)

Lovely club house with excellent staff. We had Sunday lunch which was good value and excellent quality. Atmosphere is quiet but comfortable, it is an old established Golf club and the feeling of tradition is welcoming.

Old fashioned club where visitors get a warm welcome in the club and a good test on the links. Try the gin and tonic sorbet, its the club special.

Deal is a very challenging golf course! Not as well known as Royal St George's but for my money much more difficult. Friendly staff and great food accompany a first class golf course. You must play here if you are a devotee of the great game!
