“A gem of a find”

Looking for things to do in Chatham, we came across an event taking place on LV21 in Gillingham. Being just a short drive from Chatham I looked further into it and it was a poetry theatre production called One Way ticket and was intrigued that it would be taking place on a ship and that the tickets were only £2.00 each.

The sat nav found the pier easily and there was plenty of parking. Once on board we got the friendliest of welcomes from everyone we met and were invited to look around the ship until the performance began. Unfortunately the weather wasn't co-operative as they usually begin the play outside but it had to be all inside the day we went. The ship itself is huge with lots of interesting nooks and crannies to explore. We were able to help ourselves to a very good selection of refrehments that were all included in the ticket price. The play was captivating and very enjoyable - told the story of child migrants shipped to Australia after WW2 to work long, hard hours with cruel treatment; a quite horific story with children in care homes taken without their parents' consent and told their children had been adopted, while the children mostly never got to see or really know their parents again or where they'd come from, but it was so well written and excellently performed that it was enjoyed by all ages.

They had also set up an activity for children (little and big!) to find photographs all around the ship, then complete a sheet to write their own rhyme to fit the photo with a prize at the end for the best.

Not sure what arrangements would be for accessibility (so call ahead to check) and the toilet facility isn't on board but is a portaloo on the pier.

I can't praise the performers, the local council who had the good sense to provide funding and also the library service who ran an activity on family trees and it was in the most interesting venue that I've ever seen a play. We'll definitely look out for other activities taking place on board - and would highly recommend seeing the play.
