“Horrendous experience”

Hippodrome Childrens Indoor Playground
Reviewed 16 January 2013

My child was recently seriously hurt at a child's party here. We had visited a few times for parties, and never found it very good, but you go as the children want to go to parties, so you grin and bare it. However you never expect it to be unsafe. My 6 year old was in the inflated tunnel system with her friends and she wanted to feel the cold air, and was able to put her hand into the FAN!!! No ambulance was called on request by me and the staff had no idea what to do, the first aider decided it was not a need for the ambulance as it was a walk in job!! She has since had reconstructive surgery at a specialist hospital and may face further treatment in the future. She should never have been able to put her hand near the mechanism in the first place and it could have been a smaller child. Coupled with the appalling response from the proprietor who them put the same equipment on for the next party without an investigation! Shocking, don't go there "/

We have used this on numerous occasions, mostly during school holidays when the grandkids and nieces are down to stay. Our last visit was during Easter week this year (2012).

As you would expect from an indoor softplay park it is very noisy, especially during school holiday periods or when there are birthday parties going on. Take some earplugs with you if you have an aversion to high pitched screaming kids.

Also, although there is an area for toddlers and under 5s, I found that the bigger kids were constantly going into that section, chasing each other around and knocking the little ones over. I had to "kindly" ask them several times not to play in that area but they were being totally ignorant and continued with their antics and their parents said nothing to stop them. We had to continually remove our 3yr old for fear of her getting hurt. The staff stand opposite this section behind the counter serving snacks and drinks so they can see fully what goes on but they do very little about it - nothing at all whilst we were there! To be honest, they don't seem to monitor very much of what's going on.

The bouncy castle is fun if your younger child can manage a couple of minutes in there before the hoards of older kids jump in and cause mayhem. The same with the small, enclosed ball pool room.

Some of the kids really do behave like caged animals that have been let loose for a while, so you really can't take your eyes off your little ones for fear they will get hurt. Yes, there's a lot of rough and tumble, lots of aggression, resulting in kids that get hurt and end up screaming in tears. I find the whole experience quite stressful!

But the grandkids always ask to go back there, so we just have to put up with the noise and chaos for a little while.

I wouldn't say it is value for money for the under 5s, simply because there is such a limited area for them to play in and with annoying older kids barging them out of the way it can be upsetting for them. After half an hour they often lose interest in everything and just want to go to the nearby swing park. For older kids they have a larger soft gym area with a great bumpy slide, so it's better value for them.

We went to the Hippodrome on a very wet day. Its very child friendly and did get very busy later. We got there early aound 10.30am and it was more enjoyable and less crowded. The children loved the play areas (they need to be watched) and the basic food is child centred and very good value. If you dont like noise and kids its not the place for you but if you are looking for a place ot go and play on a rainy day the Hippodromes for you.

At £3.50 per child this place competes price wise with the likes of Jungle Jims at Quex Park. Jungle Jims offers a meal deal and a much larger play area for the same price. The food is cheap junk at not so cheap prices. It gets crowded quickly both in the play bit and around the tables. The children like it but as an adult I can only handle 30 mins of the atmosphere before leaving. I certainly wouldn't stop to feed them there.

Not cheap or particularly cheerful but handy for non drivers in the bay on a rainy day.
