“A special place to stay, but we're still in Margate”
Reviewed 15 April 2014

It's been called a diamond in the rough elsewhere, and that's spot on - a beautiful building, restored in artfully boho distressed fashion, and an enviable setting.
Our room came with quality extras in the toiletries and refreshments departments, a huge bed, and a giant bathroom with luxury fittings. Memorable accommodation, and the breakfast was undoubtedly superb - but for me the 'served in your room' set-up and the need to order the night before took off a little of the gloss.
Part of the fun of B&B is chatting to others, or your hosts, over breakfast, and that wasn't really an option here. Every ingredient, though, was top notch and delicious.
Strolling back through the town centre after dinner, our pleasant post-prandial mood was broken by a screaming drunken argument of the sort that are only too common in many a town centre up and down the country, but not what you're looking for in what's supposed to be a renaissance resort - and it was only about 10pm. Sad.
A lovely building, a five-star experience and all the best with it, but not a 'must return' I'm afraid.

Thanks for taking the time to review your stay with us. We're sorry you didn't enjoy our special feature of room service breakfast. It's what most of our guests enjoy out of their stay. The chance to not have to face anyone else at breakfast and just be private. We're glad to hear you enjoyed our breakfasts though! Yes, we are in a town and that means you may come across all walks of life. But that makes us placed in a handy location to be able to walk to most of the attractions in the area. Thanks again.

There's no doubt that Margate is on the up and it's five star B&Bs like The Reading Rooms that are setting the trend far more effectively than the overhyped Turner Contemporary gallery. With just three rooms decorated in a 'shabby chic' style, it's more like staying in someone's very tasteful home, particularly as each room occupies an entire floor. Unusually, breakfast is served in your room at a time to suit you. And this isn't just any old breakfast. Each evening a list of all the options is left in your room for you to devise your breakfast feast. If you really wanted everything, I'm sure the delightful owners, Liam and Louise, would be happy to indulge you, even if it meant multiple trips for them up and down the stairs with antique breakfast trays. Any criticisms are minor. It would be nice to have a couple of wingback chairs as well as the rather uncomfortable metal and wood chairs around the breakfast table. An honesty bar (or just a bottle each of red and white wine left in the room with some glasses) would be a good addition too.

After reading all of the other reviews, I found it hard to believe that this place could be as good as it was made out to be.......and it wasn't - the loo roll was on the wrong way round on the holder and "muesli" was spelled wrongly on the breakfast menu ...AND a seagull poo'd on my car parked outside! Other than these major flaws, the room, the bathroom, the bed and the breakfast were all beyond perfect. We had the room on the top floor and could see the sea across the Square (once the fog lifted). As other Reviewers have commented, the Reading Rooms has a beautifully relaxed atmosphere - the hardest thing you'll have to do is choose what to have for breakfast (served in your room at the time you want). The owners are warm, welcoming and accomodating and have created something really rather wonderful .......

Room Tip: Room 3 on the top floor has views to the sea (on a clear day) and is full of light. The bed is the m...

We have just returned from a two night break at the reading rooms. Margate proved a little different than the last time I visited 31 years ago.Although it still has its problems, its overwhelming vibe of regeneration and hard working hope was evident. But to the hotel, well having been pretty stressed when arriving, two days later I could'nt feel any better if I had been to a health spa. Everything, the room, the bathroom & its REN products, breakfasts, the quiet professionalism and attention to detail by Liam & Louise made this stay Perfection.

Thank you so much for your kind review. It means a lot to get feedback. We're really glad to hear that you left us well rested and refreshed. The Ren goodies do their trick in the bathroom. Thank you again for coming to stay with us.

Gorgeous room, beautiful bathroom and great breakfast served in the bedroom. Only 5 minutes walk to the old town centre and seafront.

No car park, so you have to hope you get lucky with a meter on the square. Margate is buzzing on Friday & Saturday evenings but appears to close on a Sunday!

Fantastic B&B but overpriced. Great for a special event though.

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us. We're really glad you enjoyed your birthday weekend. We're sorry to hear you might have made a mistake re parking. We have vouchers for parking on the square so no need to feed the meter.

We stayed here in February for a weekend and had the most lovely, relaxing time. The room was beautiful and we didn't really want to leave and explore the town. Margate is interesting - in a good way, if a bit rough around the edges. Breakfast is fantastic and a real treat to have it in your room over looking the trees in the square.

The only minor point is that as it's all wood floors, light sleepers may be woken up from time to time by other guests on the stairs, or in the room above you. But, you soon fall back to sleep in the most comfortable bed….mmmmm

Room Tip: Top floor room is the best… and then 1first floor…

My boyfriend and I went for a long weekend to Margate and we were so lucky to stay at the Reading Rooms. The bulling is so beautiful and our room was right at the top of the house with an enormous comfy bed and bathroom. The styling of the room was stunning. Breakfast is delicious and I just can't recommend this place highly enough. I can't wait to go back this year!
