Owner description: The Shell Grotto is one of the world’s most mysterious places: a series of underground rooms and passageways covered by 2000sqft of exquisite mosaic created with 4.6 million shells. Discovered in 1835, nobody knows who created it, when, or why. “The grotto is simultaneously haunting and homely. It could be a lost pagan shrine or have ‘A Present From Margate’ picked out in the shells - it wouldn’t matter. It’s still magical, mysterious and (once it’s in your head) impossible to forget.” Far From the Sodding Crowd: More Uncommonly British Days Out, Penguin Books, 2007

We walked out to Grotto Hill from Margate Old Town, and I am pretty sure my husband thought I was leading him on a wild goose chase until we saw the only sign just at the bottom of the road to the Grotto. We visited on a very hot day, so the chance to get underground was a welcome relief. It is an intriguing place to visit and worth tracking down if you are in Margate.

I was very impressed by this place, as the photos i had seen do not really capture the strangeness of actually walking through the Grotto. There is a small but informative exhibition before you descend the stairs. The exhibition gives us more questions than answers but this if part of the charm of this enigmatic place. We managed to park for free locally, but this might not be possible at peak tourist times. We also had the place almost to ourselves, which contributed to the charm. I would recommend this place wholeheartedly anyway. Admission charge is reasonable, and there is a place to buy gifts and snacks at reasonable prices

Fascinating tale of how this wonder was found by mistake in the early 1800's. It's tucked away at the back of Margate. Descend into the gloom, and be greeted with millions of seashells stuck in amazing patterns on the walls of this small laberynthine structure. No-one knows who built it or why, and it opens out deep underground to what seems to be a meeting/worship place with what looks like an altar.
Staff really helpful, interesting info sheets, a bit of a museum of artefacts, souvenirs if that's your thing, and even a little coffee and cake place.
Wonderful, a real must-see.

£3.50 pp to get in and unless you really want to study the shells you will be in and out in 10minutes. I love shells but my husband was bored after 5 mins and couldn't understand why we had spent an hour to get there from where we were staying.

this was a pleasant place to visit and I am sure someday someone will realise why it was first built.
